I tried bringing my computer over to the TV to have some relaxation on the couch this summer.

PC games having glitches and issues specific to when they are run over HDMI that is basically never discussed but seems to be rampant as hell. Literally every other game I tried had some sort of major issue that prevented me from playing it on my TV that DID NOT exist at all when I ran the PC like normal into my monitor.

The living room gaming PC is 110% a dirty fucking meme. It'd be awesome if it was feasible but it is fucking not.

What console should I buy?

The thing is though, is that since PCs wildly vary in hardware, games that work perfectly on one piece of hardware might have some bug on another. Typically this isn't a problem, but if you're primarily gaming on PC at some point some bug is going to arise where you're going to have to dig up a third party patch and manually install it or do some google searches and change a few PC settings. If OP's a really impatient person he might not want to be bothered with all that

take it from someone who tried to convert from pc gaming to ps4 in 2013. i didnt want to spend money on upgrading my gpu so i opted to get a ps4 in december. back then the newest console i had was wii and before that ps2.
the no game meme was very true, it didnt help that 2014 was a bad year for video games either. all it had was some tech demo games, yearly AAA trash and remasters until the release of bloodborne.
online was terrible given i was paying money for it. when i played destiny, psn would go down few times a week.
updates would take forever on wired connection on 100 mbps internet.
dualshock lasted shorter than the 360 controller with chinese batteries, until i cut the light off. turns out when it is charged it still communicates wirelessly with ps4.
load times were terrible in most games, the default hdd was so slow.
and generally it lacked the comfiness of old consoles. they no longer make games for local multiplayers except for sport games.
i now use ps4 only for exclusives.

The fact remains, though, that I've never had problems like the ones you're describing. Maybe something is just fucked up with the HDMI output of your GPU.

This is pretty much true. The lack of total uniformity probably makes optimization more difficult and therefore less successful, but in general, if you have a modern GPU then you're going to be able to play modern games. Older games on a modern PC can be hit-or-miss, but playing older console games on a modern console usually isn't possible at all unless there's a re-release.

If your budget is only 500 bucks, I wouldn't recommend a PC, unless you're willing to get second-hand parts, as the prices of RAM, SSDs and especially GPUs are fucking crazy right now. You can get a good base PC for 300 bucks minus the GPU, and get somethings like a Nvidia 980 or Radeon 290/390 depending on your budget.

Also always buy RAM second hand. If it worked when new, it'll work for another 50 years until it corrodes, RAM doesn't go wrong unless someone physically damages it.
