Mechanical keyboards. Are they worth it?
>>
>>387522743
no
>>
They won't make you better at games but they're nice if you type a lot and can type fast.

>>387522743
They're not for me. I prefer chiclet keyboards, easier to slide the hand across the entire board. I can imagine the CLACK CLICK CLACK would get annoying as well.
>>
>>387522743
the one with numpad sure

the ones without or just blank keys are fucking meme shit. RGB leds are pretty meme but leds are acceptable so get them in non rgb. They definitly make a difference when typing in the dark which you should always be doing to get true blacks and color from your monitor.

once you get clikkity clak keyboards you wont go back, like going from 1080p to 1440p.
>>
>>387523036
Just don't get one with super loud mechanisms?
>>
>>387523036
pretty sure they make mech chiclets
>>
If a nice quality feeling keyboard is important to you, then yes. If not, then no.
>>
Style over substance
>>
If you think it will suddenly make you great at vidya, no. If you use your computer for several hours a day, then yes.

Most of the detractors are either a) people who've never used mechs before or b) fell for the price = quality meme and bought overpriced crap from Das/Logitech/Corsair. You can get a perfectly good mech for less than $50, under $40 if you don't need a 10key.
>>
Unless you're using a flat keyboard you'll notice no increase in performance or comfort.

However, if you're posting on /v/ and playing video games for hours every day you might as well buy one of the many available >$100 as they're satisfying to use to most.
>>
>>387523823
Anon please, we all know the less keys a keyboard has the more it costs. Other than that though you're correct.

if yes, you already have one and are alright.

How many of these stupid threads are going to be made?
Yes, they are worth it.
No, you don't have to get some $200 Razer bullshit.
Yes, people who call them a meme are literal mouthbreathers.
Any other questions?

Not that anon, but I'm interested in a mech.
I was about to buy the VM01, but then I noticed it doesn't have the accented letters.

just get a high quality membrane keyboard and it's actually better.
not even joking. I have a keyboard that feels the same as good blue switches with way less sound.
>>

>>
>>387522743
Makes no difference in Vidya. Feels a bit better for typing but not necessary and doesn't actually improve your speed.
>>
>>387529016
well I've used multiple mechanical keyboards and I actually just like this membrane keyboard better.
but it makes sense, based on physics, that all you have to do is shape the membranes correctly and they'd have better characteristics anyways. you just have to not cheap out on the membrane material.
>>
>>387523823
Das is good though, bought mine from five years ago before every other company jumped on the mechanical keyboard bandwagon and I'm still using the same one. They are as solid as they come.
>>
>>387525916
U wot
>>
>>387522743
I have that exact same keyboard the daskeyboard one, I have blue switch one they are really not that good only thing they offer is that you can press a lot of keys at once and keys are deep as fuck always mess up my osu!mania accuracy.
But I haven't tried red switch ones people say they are good for games
>>
>>387522824
New mechanical keyboards are surfacing with analog keys. Some titles where I can see that making a massive improvement would be something like GTA. Games where you would want mouse aiming but with the ability to ease in and out on acceleration and steering. Mechanical keyboards are mostly for nicer materials and feel but I think analog keyboards will actually be a huge step up mechanically for certain titles.
>>
>>387529528
wow that's a reason to HAVE mechanical keys instead of just making your membranes not garbage.
but it seems prohibitively expensive.
but, it'd be a good idea to put it in for like 6 keys or something. that's not too bad.
>>
Buy one with clone switches. The patent already expired, no reason to pay the insane price.

You shouldn't really need one for gaming, but if you type a lot they're great and feel great. The slight click-clack is quite satisfying and part of the use experience.

The real eye-opener is when you go from a membrane to a mechanical keyboard for years and then have to use a membrane again for whatever reason. The keys are less responsive, because they rest on rubber presses are less consistent, and I find myself hammering the keys harder than a mechanical because I have no feel for the actuation point.

tl;dr Membranes/chics are fine but mechanical keys are better
>>
>>387531374
Man that looks cool as fuck
>>
>>387522743
Nothing over 60$. Mechanicals feel nice, but don't fall for the meme.
I had a Happy Hacker S2 and a Ducky, swore by them. Bought cheap chink shit with imitation blues and LEDs on a lark and I literally could not tell the difference, I even liked it more than my Ducky (which I immediately sold). I kept my HHS2, but I wouldn't buy another.

Don't be the moron that falls for exorbitant priced keyboards.

Sure. Just don't fall for the brown Cherry switches meme. It's for shitstains who say they are a hybrid between gamer and typist, but it actually feels like typing on sand.

>>387536647
None of them are loud if you are actually playing games. They are only loud when you are typing text fast like while posting on /v/.
If you just keep your finger on the key waiting to be pressed and are precise in a game, it isnt loud at all.

but it can
The switches on most of the popular brands are all made by the same company, and the differences are usually just useless features like programmable lighting and macros. Just get a mid range keyboard with steel construction and high quality keycaps for 60-80 bucks

Short answer? No.

Long answer? If you can find one for a good price with nice switches that suit your preferred feel, it can be a good investment, especially if you type a lot. For gaming they are kind of useless, I've noticed zero improvement from going from a 10€ HP Rubberdome POS to a 140€ Corsair K70 with Reds. The typing experience is better though, but not 140€ better. I made a mistake buying this keyboard, I should have just bought a Tomoko or Ducky instead. Still, I don't think that mechs are completely useless. Just don't buy Rommer G switches or fall for the /g/ memes of buying 60%, 75% and other crap.
The people who say they never use the numpad simply have never had to actually use a keyboard in their lives, I find myself reaching for the non existent numpad on my laptop keyboard and it annoys the hell out of me.
Guaranteed too that 90% of the people buying meme "compact" keyboards will then proceed to buy a shitty 10 inch mousepad and play with fucked up sensitivies, so ergonomics my ass.

If you want to get a mech though either go to a store and ask them to let you try using one for a bit at the store or order a switch sample board for 20€.

>>
>>387522743
I buy a 10 dollar keyboard twice a year and I beat all my friends at starcraft.
>>
>>387539460
amazon is a poor place cause only the overpriced gaymer brands return in your searches. Cooler master and Ducky tends to be towards the higher end of the mid range brands, but they are solid keyboards. Cooler master masterkeys PBT and Ducky one PBT would be the ones to go for. Make sure you get a keyboard with PBT keycaps instead of the cheap ABS that so many brands like to use.
A better place to look if you're in north america is https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php
>>
>>387540032

mechanicalkeyboards is a great site, their free shipping is pretty damn fast too. I received my Ducky from them in 2 or 3 days.

If just for gaming it wont make alot of difference.
The smaller boards below are custom and build your own keyboards.
As a programmer and having to type alot i build my own mech keyboard as it for sure makes a huge difference, being able to carry a 40% with me wherever i go and always using my board is too worth it.
Being able to fully customise the board and tailor it for my needs is too good.
Gamers go on about mech boards and sound like fags coz they bought the new razor cherry mx blah blah bullshit and gloat about it.... its retarded
>>
>>387540670
/g/ has lots of stuff other than programming, if you want good hardware advice you should look at the catalog and find the designated general, lurk for a few days and ask for recommendations. Be wary though because like alll 4chan boards and generals, /g/ has its own fair share of memes. For example people will tell you to go buy a Topre HHKB or some other overpriced keyboard that doesn't make you a better typist and other stupid crap.
People for some reason also have an aversion to full sized keyboards for some reason, I put my bet on the fact that compacts are more aesthetic and make you look cooler. Most of the people there are posers who have like 3-5 keyboards they don't use and just have for show. Anyone who actually uses a keyboard often for anything will welcome the addition of a numpad.

Still there's some really good advice to read there. And people won't make fun of you for not wanting to spend 200 bucks on a keyboard.

>>387540853
There's still plenty of boards with ISO layout though, just not as much selection as ANSI.
