What would people do with the Star Craft source code anyway? This is a genuine question.

Improve the game. For free. It's an old and busted Win95 compatible program that is not at all optomised for modern hardware and software. Would it not be good to run natively in whatever OS you choose, what whatever resolution you choose? Would it not benefit from interface improvements based on later games?

I don't like RTS games at all, Starcraft included, and even I can instantly see how the public release of the source would be a HUGE thing that would breathe new life into the game and make a much loved game that much more loved.

"what would you do with the starcraft source code?"

you could literally remake starcraft and do anything that you wanted with it, on any system. south korea would have given 1000 kpop starlets for that fucking disc, if only to decentralize control of broodwar away from blizzard. you could literally recreate the game's systems, retexture everything, then not have to worry about copyright claims.. you could redo the entire client side UI (ie 1998's battlenet ui wouldn't have to be used anymore).. you could perfect the netcode.. the guy giving the disc to blizzard was a HUGE blow to starcraft fans everywhere... i'm fucking furious that he have that disc to the creators of sc2, what a damn joke

No one ever knows what they'd do with it, until they get their hands on it and suddenly endless mods bloom eternally.

Granted, it's an old game, but still a loved one. You can be sure it'd see countless extensive mods, starting with more competition oriented ones, as well as huge ass infinite maps, higher resolution UI, windowed mode, better AI, advanced unit orders, DotA type games...

Just see what happened with Doom, or even Transport Tycoon which got a complete fucking rewrite. As one of the classics of vidya, Starcraft's source code would have been huge.

>>

That's called theft by finding. Just because you find a wallet on the side of the road does not mean you're entitled to the contents of it without first attempting to find the legal owner or ascertain if the object was actually abandoned and not merely misplaced.

rewrite the graphics renderer to work with modern systems leaving the original code intact. and also porting to a bunch of different platforms. like what has been done for Doom/Quake/Descent/a bunch of games that have released their source

though without Broodwar it's pretty useless. and from all accounts we've heard the Starcraft code is a fucking mess so I dunno how good it would actually be

It's like one of those "pick one" scenarios in vidya.

>release source code to public, risking legal action from a corporate giant but regarded as a hero throughout the vidya community
or
>return source code to Blizzard, and be rewarded with juicy goodies but regarded as a faggot throughout the vidya community

>>
>>387506735
What are you talking about not worrying about copyright claims? The intellectual property still belongs to Blizzard, the distribution rights still belong to Blizzard, the copyright and trademark still belong to Blizzard. >>
>>387508439
I'm going to assume you're in your 20s because you think 20 years is a long time, but 20 years is an incredibly short period of time. Copyright laws exist for the same reason patent laws exist; by giving people the ability to exclusively profit from an idea or invention you incentivize inventors and content creators. If shortly after you made something other people can take it for free there's very little incentive to put the time and money into creating new content/inventions.
>>
>>387509296
It's a viable strategy large companies and rich people can and DO do. Even if you're wrong you bring up a lawsuit on something frivolous. Most people don't have the time and money to fight a multiyear court case so they'd lose by default, even if they were in the right.

>Why are people so fucking retarded
This is a constant.
>and think that a modding community of any decent size could be built around stolen code
Depending on WHAT is in the source code you could easily make use of it and improve upon it. For a simple example, say the maximum resolution supported is 1024x768 (that's not to say it is, but roll with me here). If you had access to source, and in this case Gold Source (which implies its the release candidate) then you could make some minor changes and add support for essentially whatever resolution you please. If it was boxed to 4:3 you could also change it to support widescreen as well. That would probably the most basic of things available.
Now on top of that assuming you had the correct dependencies to build (to which i have no idea what SC needed to be compiled) then you could essentially use what source you have and release it as well, which is what Blizzard and most companies see as a competitor or threat (or in this case unauthorized usage of blizzard property, to which they would shut it down)
>that Blizzard would immediately shut down?
If and I say IF they were to remove any of blizzard's data from the source and pack it up as their own thing, then they would 100% be on solid legal ground outside of the potential "you have our source, give it back"
>last 2 lines
I dont think either of those pertain to this anymore due to the IP being old. It's the title profile that made it a problem. Any other game title of the time likely would be a non-issue

Selling the item (which was already lost to time) in itself is not illegal, as you're not making profit off of the intellectual property. If such a transaction, of giving the item away, was illegal, simply being in possession of it would be illegal, and it's not, so it's not.

You can do and sell whatever you want with the item so long as you dont intent to repurpose the info within. (And then claim it as your own.)

>build slightly different before final, before press builds were made
>500-900
>build with significant changes present (go for like E3 perhaps)

>shoshinkai demo (you know paired with the kirby air ride n64 demo)
>2000-15000
>source code (build date unknown, potentially alpha, potentially retail possibly show demo)
>500-100000 (would have to be under lockdown at all times, the moment they know you have it people will come flocking to you, lawyers especially)

Its hard to tell due to the amount of money people would fork over to fight over that data, but believe me if theres a fight over that stuff, it's going to skyrocket in value

If you need an example, there was a collector who has since passed away that was prepared to buy some N64 DD disks that contained Ura Zelda's data. Unfortunately the publicity received scared the seller off, and due to the passing of the person in particular the deal was off, but the numbers were in 10k+ range for this, and that wasnt even the start.

Nintendo IPs are stupidly protected, and any prototype content from these IPs is really fucking rare to come by. In fact the fact we have an E3 build of 3d Land (3ds) already boggles my mind,

If he wanted free stuff, he should've done what he did. If he really wanted to distribute the source code, he'd keep anonymous and FAR FAR AWAY from reddit and 4chan, and probably leak it in some IRC channel or pastebin link or some shit behind 7 keksies.

You can't do both, unless you want to deal with lawyers immediately after you release the code, a day or 10 years later. Granted, the case would be harder for Blizz after some years, but you'll get them at your door alright.

This source code costs fucking nothing. Nobody in their sane mind wouldn't pay for a source code for a video game written in 90s. This thing probably wouldn't even run on modern system. Have you faggots even play Starcraft? It's a sprite-based game, there is no super-complex mechanics. It's probably cheaper to rewrite the whole thing from scratch than to refactor the old source code. What do you think there is in code? Rocket science? No, it's fucking 2D engine with primitive AI and netcode. There are already plenty open source engines that can do the same thing and more.

returning the game which was a priceless artifact of gaming history and would have changed the world had it been released to the public

No, seriously, I'm not joking. With the source code, we could be playing a legit SC2 years from now.

One day, SC's source code will be released. But we'll all be dead by then.

not that anon but i'd scour the internet to find that guy and point blizzard towards his general direction for tying one of the greatest acts of "good"on the internet to a goddamn pony.

How does it feel to be this delusional?
It would've been nice to have a piece of history roaming the internet, but never to the extent you're assuming.

So didn't you just justify why someone wouldn't want to do that?

does anyone remember something similar happening to a cassette tape or something?

data tapes are gold mines for shit
terabytes of archives on data tapes is something people like to look for. At the same time it has a cost. It takes a shitton of time to handle, and sometimes special software on top of special hardware depending on the tape model and stuff like that
