Depending on WHAT is in the source code you could easily make use of it and improve upon it. For a simple example, say the maximum resolution supported is 1024x768 (that's not to say it is, but roll with me here). If you had access to source, and in this case Gold Source (which implies its the release candidate) then you could make some minor changes and add support for essentially whatever resolution you please. If it was boxed to 4:3 you could also change it to support widescreen as well. That would probably the most basic of things available.
Now on top of that assuming you had the correct dependencies to build (to which i have no idea what SC needed to be compiled) then you could essentially use what source you have and release it as well, which is what Blizzard and most companies see as a competitor or threat (or in this case unauthorized usage of blizzard property, to which they would shut it down)
