What went so horribly wrong? 1 and 3 are so good, howcome this abortion managed to screw up so much?

When DMC2 was made, Capcom didn't invite Kamiya to direct it. They got some other guy, who to this day, is nameless to do it. It sucked so bad, Itsuno had to be brought in to salvage the project.
He then went on the direct 3 then 4.

Didn't Kamiya say 3 and 4 sucked?
>>387496193
I never heard that.
>>387496193
I'm sure he back peddled on that since he went on record to say good things about DmC right before it was released.
>>387496082
Itsuno directed DMC2 dummy, he just got his shit together for 3
>>387496193
no he says 3 is good, I think he likes 4 but hates the dice shit
>>387496274
Yes, he did direct 2. But doesn't the story go that DMC2 was being directed by some unnamed guy but Itsuno was later made the director?
>>387495238
Eh it happens. Look at Resident Evil 4. Huge success right? Loved to this day. When a different team were tasked with literally copy pasting RE4 for the new gen with RE5, HOW could they possibly go wrong? They don't even need to come up with a new concept right? But RE5 is nowhere NEAR as good as RE4. Nowhere near. The answer is, sometimes you cannot just wing stuff anon, even when shown how.
Same kind of went for RE0 as well btw, once again, Mikami left an incredible blue print for a new team to carbon copy. What could go wrong? And if you put REmake and Zero side by side, even small things seem apparent. The camera angles, detail, pacing and atmosphere in REmake have a real vision that thry just couldn't seem to carbon copy in Zero.

He made a small dig at DMC4 with the Dice mini game. But he has gone on to praise Itsuno, even saying that he basically saved the series because DMC2 at one point was straight up horrifically bad as opposed to just mediocre.
So there's clear mutual respect, shame Capcom will forever hold a grudge against Platinum games as it'd be cool to see them collaborate on a game.
>>387495238
Basically what >>387496082 said. Capcom wanted to quickly cash in DMC1's success and the game suffered for it.
>>387496274
>>387496353
Yeah Itsuno was brought in basically at the end part of the development and he did what he could to salvage it.
Just makes you think how bad the game actually was, when it turned out like this in the end.
>>387496274
You know how Disney fired the directors of the Han Solo spinoff movie and replaced them with Ron Howard recently? That's basically what happened with DMC2.
>Game is in development
>It's not being developed well
>They give it to Itsuno who wraps it up
Yes DMC2 is a lackluster game, but it's not Itsuno's fault. At that stage Capcom just wanted it out the door so they could start anew.
>>387495238
Development hell
Itsuno got into it by the end of the development and made some fixes, because it was even much worse before him
>>387496452
>He made a small dig at DMC4 with the Dice mini game
And rightly fucking so. What a pace killing, time wasting, buzz kill that fucking thing is. Mfw.
>>387496452
>will forever hold a grudge against Platinum game
Thank god, because PG can't into both level design and good combat unlike Capcom
