The dream world, and all its weird things like the flying bed, the huge holes in the overworld, it all made it feel very comfy, which I enjoyed. The OST is nice too, and the party chat was a bit better than V, though V had some lines of party chat that hit pretty deep. I can understand why most people would dislike it after playing something like DQV though.

Pretty much. I played it after playing the first five games almost back to back, so I thought I might have been suffering from Dragon Quest burnout, but I had fun with VII and VIII which I played shortly afterword, so I guess it was just VI.

VIII's story and characters are grossly overrated and nothing else about it is special besides the gorgeous world map.

I also prefer IX, solely for the gameplay which is a vast improvement on VIII's point system which wasn't thought out at all.

But to be honest, I can understand why you would think Dragon Quest isn't a series that should be played for their stories, but can also tell you that V is the exception.

Of course somewhere in this conversation I missed to point out that there's actually a lot of customization in team building with monsters that puts it on a high mechanical level with other titles in the series focusing on gameplay, but DQV's story really is on a completely different level than anything else in the series.

Honestly, I was one of the rare people that really, really liked VII. It was depressing, it was funny, it was overly long but never overstayed it's welcome to me, I dug the characters and found the inclusion of the "epic hero" of all time to be a decrepit old man a stroke of genius.
