I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say Episode 1 genuinely has no redeemable qualities. Even Sonic 06 has a few nice music tracks, Ow the Edge has funny cutscenes. Sonic 4's just unpleasant the entire way through. It's aesthetically hideous, it plays even worse than it looks, it gives you 12 acts for 15 bucks, the gameplay is significantly dumbed down to make it palatable for early iPhones. I can't even describe how I felt when I was awarded half a dozen extra lives just by being funneled through automated spring sequences to the tune of something that sounds like fucking keyboard cat.

Casino Street is for sure the most soulless neon-lit urban themed zone in the franchise. The part where it just gives you like 15 lives in Act 2 was pretty dumb.

I think Shadow needs to be commended for how many basic improvements it made over Sonic Heroes, particularly rail grinding and light dashing.

It was insane that '06 regressed both of those improvements.

Notably, it has two levels that got so much backlash that SEGA announced that they would replace them for the console version (they are still in the phone version). One was a level devoted entirely to a minecart that you used the triggers to tilt the level, like the special stages. The other was a "score attack" level where you grind 100,000 points in a tiny pinball table.

People give Shadow a lot of shit because the game obviously has a lot of shitty ideas, but it's somehow better than Heroes.

And Heroes is considered one of the good games despite playing like complete ass.

Shadow is superior to Heroes. Shadow also has great music and some of the absolute best 6th-gen Sonic level design period.

If there were no guns, was skinned like a Sonic game, and they got rid of the heroes "running on crisco" physics, It would have been considered by all, hands down, the best non-boost Sonic period.

Honestly, if you gave him Chaos Spears it'd have been fine too. That's even what the final boss was.

Imagine if Shadow had a third "Neutral" meter that functioned as his ammunition for Chaos Spear.

1. I think Heroes and Shadow need HD re-releases.

2. If there is a PC version of the game someday, it would be nice if someone made a mod to basically put Sonic 06 Shadow in ShTH, moveset and all, while refining everything else.

It's sad, unfortunate, and ironic that Shadow's finest hour is in Sonic 06. Great character development, no emo Maria sadness bullshit, great support cast...

He deserved better honestly.
