Why aren't you level 50 in Splatoon 2?

When you played a match of turf war in the first game, wasn't the exp you earned for the match just the amount of points you got? I only played splatoon 1 for a few months after it came out, but I believe I remember that being the case. I like that system better, I keep playing matches where I win with upwards of 2000 points, but I still only get 1400 or however many it is exp

Even if you just sat around and inked your spawn like an idiot every ranked match, doing enough of them to reach 50 would probably land you with enough carry wins to be all S's
