Mega Man has better music more consistently. Sonic has some exceptional titles but handheld games maybe have four or five memorable pieces between them all.

I've only played the first 7 Mega Man games and almost all Sonic games but even with a small sample I definitely enjoyed the classic Mega Man music a lot, maybe more so than classic Sonic but Sonic's got a lot of memorable tracks throughout all the generations. Can't really say any of them are "better" but they're definitely some of the best in the genre, and possibly the industry on some occasions.

Most of his life was just unwarranted pain, and his entire stage and theme song reflect that, which is why it's so out of place with the rest of the series' music. MMX lore is some dark shit.

Megaman definitely. The quality is just as good and there's way more. Not to mention each individual song is more likely to feel iconic in megaman due to it's close association to a boss character. (this might be a weird point to make, but I can get more into, say, quickman's theme because it's tied to quickman, the correlation makes the music feel richer. sonic doesn't really have that until later)

Sonic has some fantastic music for sure, and at the end of the day, i'd be down for listening to music from either series at any time.
