It's fun. Takes the story of Ace Combat 2 and throws in elements of Ace Combat 0 in too (cool Ace squadrons)

It does have a QTE thing like Assault Horizon does but it's not required to kill enemies (unlike AH), it's just a helper since the 3DS doesn't have dual sticks.

I've only played Assault Horizon.
Should I start playing with the first AC or can I skip to the PS2 titles ?

You can start from 1 if you want to see how it's evolved, but the PS2 games (4, 5 and Zero, play in that order) are by far the high points in the series.

The story between them isn't connected so you can skip to them if you want.
There's also Ace Combat 6 if you have a 360 too, which is also fun.

Now that I think about, should you really be considered an Ace if the six planes you brought down were slow moving and defenseless bombers? Because that's pretty much how every Ace Combat game starts

Everything past zero has been a complete trainwreck not worth touching, ignore anyone who recommends those titles. Try out 6 and X if you're really hankering for more after, you'll quickly realise that they're not worth playing if you enjoyed the story more than the simplistic arcade combat.
