Well, being honest I don't think the game needed any of that either, but I do believe that the Alpha Shizune route was far superior to what we got. The release version is lots of slow build up that just deflates into nothing, which is why the ending act is so bad.

The real reason why Katawa Shoujo was so memorable and successful was that the game had this incredibly real, unique air to it that contradicted its theme of being about dating disability girls.

You don't see the typical anime tropes with the girls in Katawa Shoujo. In most school dating sims, all of the girls are purposefully written to be over the top in some way or another: overly cutesy, loud, shy, blushing and running away yelling "BAKAAAA" at you, or alternatively the game is over the top dark or based on some fantasy setting.

Katawa Shoujo lures you in with a gimmick of "cripple porn" but is actually extremely subtle with its writing and humor.

None of the characters are obviously and blatantly attracted to you, they only like you in subtle ways. Despite being cripples, none of the characters have overly tragic backstories except Hanako and Rin, but even they are more realistically portrayed and exhibit behaviors of somebody who would actually suffer from PTSD-like symptoms due to their upbringing.

The behaviors these characters exhibit in response to their problems are much closer to life than in any game I've played, and their personalities are more detached from anime cliches and made me feel like I was actually talking to people in my high school band camp all over again.

The first sex scene with Lilly is purposefully written to feel tense and awkward since she and Hisao are both horny virgins, the first sex scene with Emi is awkward for Hisao while she takes the lead since she's a tad bit slutty with daddy issues while Hisao is a virgin, and her route makes it feel like Emi did most of the pursuing.

This is the real reason Katawa Shoujo is so memorable and still talked about to this day.

People with disabilities are just normal people, after all.
