What are some horror games that make use of uncanny valley?

What I mean is, some of the scariest shit in games is often the stuff that wasn't even intended to be scary. Testing halls like pic related are a good example, it's meant to just be a testing hall for the games assets, but because you know it wasn't really set up to be easily traversed by the player, and because you don't know whats behind the doors, it's kind of creepy. It is almost close enough to the normal game, but it misses it just enough to be scary. Player models doing T poses, and mannequins in player homes are the same kind of thing.

Quake might as well be a master class in "this game was supposed to be an action-ey slugfest with thumping industrial soundtrack, but it looks so dark, grungy and gritty it's constantly unsettling"

Not much of the "uncanny valley" effect, which you're also using somewhat wrongly, OP

I don't think any horror games would try to be scary by not trying to be scary, would kind of defeat the purpose of making a horror game

One thing I've noticed about classic FPS that modern ones have forgotten is that playing as a disembodied head moving unnaturally fast through environments can be jarring and even vertigo inducing. Whether through deliberate effort or not a lot of early shooters synergized this natural effect by featuring claustrophobic, gloomy and/or gory environments. Modern games, attempting to deny their nature as games with "realism" ironically break immersion.

>>387380759
Quake might not be a good example of that, though. The default movement speed is plodding. To move fast requires advanced movement (which is very exploit-based and not as simple as Doom's "strafe diagonally :^))", which 99% of players assuredly didn't know how to do on a first playthrough

I got pretty spooked in skyrim once.

>be playing the new DLC, Dragonborn, where you go back in Soltheim and do whatever, late at night (3am or so), just me in the house
>it was ok
>more importantly it introduced a new object called mannequins, which essentially boil down to frozen npc's you can put armor on
>be messing around in my house, putting shit away to get some encumbrance back
>think that the mannequin looks kind of creepy just standing in the same room with no armor or anything
>stare at it for a second
>swear it did the animation for breathing
>spooked enough that i leave the house and go back to questing
>come back after inventory's full, open door to entrance of house
>as soon as i load in its standing right in front of me, off of its base and everything
>mfw
>nearly shit my pants and fall out of my chair
>stop playing

i looked it up later. apparently there was a bug that while you're not in the same zone as a mannequin, it can move around randomly like an npc

I think its the effect created by older 3D games, like anything made by Valve back in the day (other than CS) made me feel so isolated and uneasy

A lot of people cite Mario 64 as a game that gives you that uneasy feeling as well. Something about large, open, poorly detailed environments, intense shadows maybe.
>>
>>387384495
I guess the less you have to focus on the more your imagination takes over. It's the same concept the original RE games and Dino Crisis works on, they wouldn't be scary if you could manipulate the camera easily and see around you clearly.

631KB, 855x481px
Pathologic is full of this shit. The game itself doesn't really actively try to scare you, but it's full of so many unintentional jump scares and uncanny animations and shit. You'll walk into a house and the combat music will immediately start playing and some guy will leap out from a room three feet away. You'll be outside on a foggy morning and see someone slowly slouching towards you from a distance. The first infected house you enter it's a claustrophobic U-shape and it spawns these ladies right behind you, making no noise at all.
>>387384495
I think it's because early 3D creates very hard, angular models, and animation was lacking a lot back then, so you'd see bizarre polygonal things flying towards you while doing some half-assed walking animation. It also leaped out of the fog that's two feet away from your face and you're in a massive empty area.

the dark room in Garry's Mod's gm_construct

For those who don't know what it is its a big dark room right bellow the map that can be accessed by going downstairs inside a nearby building, the room itself was probably created to test lighting based stuff but going there gives you this feel of being watched by something, I remember always avoiding it like a plague when I played it

It's been a while since I've played it, but I nearly remember shitting my pants when I first came across The Albino behind the slaughterhouse after being told that I was being hunted by something

Also on day one when you first exit the rich guy's house and one of those weird mole things goes running by and attacks you if you follow it. It was the first time I saw one of those things and the game had mostly been grounded in realism up to that point that it caught me completely off guard.
Almost didn't want to keep playing that shit freaked me out so bad

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do in the remake

Alright this uncanny valley shit has gotten out of hand. You morons aren't even using the term correctly anymore, and it was never a real thing in the first place, just a crude, potential explanation for why some people are unsettled by low-tech robots and crappy CG.

Look, the reason you find this vidya shit spooky isn't because it's "not quite real", but because your expectations are tempered by your experience, and your mind is telling you something is not right, thereby creating emotional disquiet that you can't reconcile with the reality at hand (ie the vidya).

Yea I actually just started the HD version for the first time and its so bleak and oppressive the whole time. I know thats what they were going for but its certainly helped along by the graphics.

I think its also because the game seems more mysterious when its not polished. Seems more like some creepypasta game youd stumbleupon rather than a AA studio releasing a finished product.
>>
I am unashamedly an Uncharted fanboy and recently bought a used copy of the ND collection so I can reply the PS3 games.

One thing I love about the UC games are some of the lush environments it takes you through. And the very organic banter between Drake and his cohorts.

UC1 is very rough around the edges compared to the sequel. It can't even hold a candle to UC2. I've been playing it recently and some parts make me feel absolutely panicked. Can't put my finger on why but it gives me a sense of dread. Something about the more restrictive environments. Poor quality movement animations. Poor voice acting compared to the sequels. Less of a sense of direction and purpose and meaning. But it doesn't give me a sense of boredom, more like a sense of terror.

I'm actually a huge fan of some of the things brought up in this thread. Most of my favorite games are older ones made during the advent of 3D games but before say.. 2010 or so.

In particular I just like when a game looks kind of gloomy. Silent Hill, Max Payne, OoT and MM, etc. Games today are made with the expectation that they will look really realistic and sharp, so they rarely give me such a unique experience. (I've also played games a long time so it's hard to surprise me I suppose)

Beyond Two Souls I think it was called is one of the only modern games that have really done it for me.

I like Silent Hill 1 the most visually out of the first three SH games because of its lofi aesthetic. The low quality textures, sound files, and models enhance the atmosphere so well. It's low resolution muddiest everything and gives the video game equivalent of film grain. Even the cover art is incredibly detailed. The more you look at it the more elements you notice in it. I wish more games could have such a spectacular atmosphere as SH1. Honestly aesthetics and atmospheres as wholesome as Silent Hill, original fallout, bioshock etc are what can make a game a favorite for me.

One of the endings of Stanley Parable is exactly what you're looking for, OP. Basically, there's a door you go through and it closes behind you. If you're fast enough you can hop back and it will close ahead of you, breaking the level. Audio narrator will instantly stop mid-sentence because you broke his scripts. Music also stops. You can now go back to the very beginning of the level (normally impossible as doors close behind you), in complete silence (narrator usually talks at all times, and ambient music plays). When you reach the beginning, you'll notice a new door has opened. Inside there's some signs indicating that an escape pod is somewhere higher, so you travel many, many flights of stairs until you reach a dark room with a sign before it saying stuff like "Player must only use the escape pod with the narrator present" (though he doesn't exist in that universe, he's just the narrator to the game), and if you go inside the pod screen turns black and you have to restart manually. The creepiest fucking thing I experienced in a videogame, mainly because I found this myself and really thought it was a bug at first.

FNAF was literally built on the concept. The dude who made it had the animatronics-style before in a kid game he made. It bombed so hard and the big critique was it looked horrifying. So he used that critique to make a horrorgame.

Also, for the unintentional things for me those are unreachable parts of the map. When I was a kid I always wanted to escape the map in Midtown Madness 2 to go to that other bridge. Of course I know that those low poly LOD models are all there is, but I can't help but stare at them sometimes wondering how's it like there, in game-world terms. Kinda get creeped out thinking about it. Just look at those pitch black half-opened windows on the top-right. Don't stare into them too long...
