Because if you're a fanatic that just has to start playing at 00:00 at release day and game allows pre-loading of some 40GB+ data that's what you do to get a few hours head start from the 'casual' crowd.
Things doesn't have to make much common sense if you're really obsessive about your hobby.

Unless there is something really worth getting from a pre-order, I won't preorder anything, especially from gamestop. my game came so late and in such poor condition I won't be fucked to give them my money again. Amazon beats them like a child.

Because there are some games I know I will buy and enjoy, and preordering gives me convenience. Digital preorders are similar, but I really only get the benefit of paying ahead of time.

If you don't have confidence in what you're paying for, don't fucking bother. The one time I've ever been wrong in preordering was Civ 6, and it took 180 hours of gameplay for me to regret that purchase.

Probably because of the "I would but it anyway on the release day" mentality, it's literally no different from that. The problem comes from the fact that most people are far too eager to label games as must-gets and end up preordering shit because of that.

This. For example, I have pre-ordered 4 games this year:
>BoTW, because Zeldas have been good even at their worst
>Persona 5, because nips already confirmed that it's good
>Wipeout: Omega Collection, because I already know that I like Wipeout and the material released before release showed that it will be a good remaster
>Crash N-Sanity Trilogy, same reasons as with Wipeout
Zero reason for remorse, because even before release I was 100% sure that I would like them. Those 100% sure cases are the only games I preorder, but stuff that I'm only 90% sure that I will like (for example, the new Prey by Arkane) has to wait for reviews before purchase. Haven't got burned even once with this logic.
