Sounds like the words of a man who hasn't actually played the game. A lot of the act 2's are some of the most creative acts in Sonic, and rank pretty well against platformers in general. The bosses are easily the most creative in the franchise.

The criticisms you're looking for are "Iizuka's meddling" and "lack of budget for artists". Yes, it's frustrating that the game re-uses assets, and that easily puts it below S3K (and maybe CD) in my book, but to say the game isn't creative just smacks of rehashing /v/'s opinions and pretending they're you're own. Which is funny, because rehashing is what you're supposedly complaining about. Really fires the ol neurons

Never played a sonic game in my life. What makes a sonic game good? What makes mania as good as everybody says it is? It just looks like standard platforming. What is the gameplay of sonic all about?

It only became a staple in recent years. Back in the day they'd have brand new grass levels (or they'd call the grass level "Green Hill" but it'd be way different - see Sonic 2 8-bit) or they would start with a different style of level altogether, like a city or a forest. Every now and then there would be a throwback - like SA2's unlockable Green Hill, or Advance 3's Sunset Hill - but it didn't become a truly reoccurring thing until the last 6 or 7 years where they literally can't stop using it.

Angel Island was just a new power-up showcase without anything that interesting.
Press Garden did the snow level better than Ice Cap. Fight me.
Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg are kinda specific to 3K's plot.

The new zones were gold, and even the ones grabbed from earlier titles were done better than the originals.
My childhood was perfectly aligned with the Sonic series, but even with that amount of nostalgia I think Mania is in general a step above the others.
Each act feels unique, the pacing is fantastic, the bosses have interesting gimmicks that make them memorable, and there are legitimately challenging segments.
All of that on top of fantastic BGM and art.
They even found a way to make special stages not feel like you were wasting your time.
It really is something that can only be accomplished after spending so much time contemplating what made the originals good and distilling it as the team did.

I really didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have.
I just hope they do well enough to fund a second project with entirely fresh content.

Do people have nostalgia glasses for 3&K or something? It's a great game, but it has its faults.

Meanwhile Mania is consistently better. The drop dash adds a lot to Sonic's movement, and honestly the only problem I have with it are some technical issues.

You don't need it but it's very useful. Any time you need to spin dash, you no longer have to completely stop, crouch, and charge. You could be speeding one way and drop dash for an instant turn around. It's super useful on running bosses if you need to accelerate quickly. Just an all around great tool.

Titanic Monarch is the result of the Mania team having to merge what they had of Chrome Gadget and Final Fever to meet the release deadlines. We were supposed to get at least one more zone in this game

not that i'm complaining, I loved Titanic Monarch, I'm just saying

But Mania looks, sounds, plays better and is much more consistent in quality overall. It really is no contest.

Actually have entirely new stages? And more of them? Mania remixes its callbacks well enough that it's still very fresh, but I would still prefer 100% new stages. I also prefer S3&K deciding to give you 14 Chaos Emeralds to collect to compensate for how many stages (aka chances) there are, rather than Mania's method of making the special stages so fucking hard to find.

Doomsday Zone is also a top notch finale.

With any luck Mania 2 will keep the format (12 zones, Sonic-Tails-Knuckles) but will balance the ratios better (6 new 6 old? 8 new 4 old?) and take the old ones from more obscure source material. People keep clamoring for 100% new but I for one would love to see Endless Mine, Botanic Base or Sleeping Egg in a potential Mania sequel.
