Basically, Microsoft lobbied against it, US came knocking to Japan and told them they'd sanction the fuck out of them.
Japanese government told the developers to stop, shut down the initiative to use it in schools and so on. All 3rd parties ceased support because of fear of losing the US market.

The OS survived in embedded devices, but you can clearly see how it fucked up their personal computing sector.
And that, my friend, is why Japan is one of the very few countries on Earth where Internet Explorer is the mainline web browser.

Anyway, hardware is tied to software. That's why the people who bought Mirosoft's license for a few measly dollars beat themselves over it every night.
Mirosoft takes a flat cut out of any PC made. Windows' licensing costs are tied into the cost of the motherboard and shit to allow them to make hardware that has a compatible BIOS/UEFI and actually run Win.
You pay them even if you buy a machine without a Windows license (i.e. preinstalled Win).

I do not give a fuck about console warring because I have multiple of which my favorite series are on but maybe the PC would be a more viable platform for developers if PC gamers weren't filthy fucking pirates who won't spend money on things they enjoy and then complain about the industry pandering to people who are willing to spend.

The console warring mentality is not limited to consoles. Companies want an edge over their competitors through the exclusivity of their products, and if consoles didn't take off, we would probably have more warring between distribution platforms and OSes, since companies would probably make more exclusives for those instead.

If you've played Black Moon Chronicles, that's much closer to how a Japanese RTS plays.
Of course, I need not mention the fact they are mostly tied to old-ass PCs and consoles with practically 0 market support nowadays.

There is no evidence to show that TRON would have been any good. Even ignoring that, Japan has been extremely slow on any sort of technological or even cultural development. They've been using god damn windows XP until recently, and their work culture is so fucking horrible that not even the locals will try to defend it.

You must keep in mind these guys had a fully functional OS ready for the Japanese market whereas Microsoft had just released fucking Windows 2.0.
No support for Japanese language, 16-bit as opposed to TRON's 32-bit architecture, only a program within MS DOS which meant having to install 2 operating systems on a tiny disk and having to load into MS DOS before starting up Windows (long ass time), support for actual graphics whereas Windows' own was paleolythic in comparison.

They knew for sure that if they didn't stop them there, America would never set foot in the Japanese computing industry ever again, it was a no-brainer for the Japanese (and possibly the rest of Asia).

Patents, some of the hardware and stuff were still done by IBM. Don't quote me on it but the initiative was sparked because of the fact you were fucked if you wanted to use a computer as a Japanese back then. Had to import DOS from America for a high price, deal with international licensing bullshit, end up with a machine that is only servicable by people who speak English AND are proficient with computers for a consumer product put into average Joe's house.
It wasn't an initiative to remove all software and hardware that wasn't Japanese, it was about making something that Japanese could use as well. For IBM, that wouldn't be a big deal. For Microsoft, it would mean having to compete with someone who figured out Asian fonts on computers, focused on video games as well because it's the homeplace of modern vidya and so on.
