Well, the HD re-release is recent. Dusk has very barebones MP and the campaign mostly not up to par with Quake's best levels. It's still fun, but I don't think it's gonna do anything for "classic style" shooters

Idunno, it's an open world, since ur free to do what you want. open worlds are non-lineair by default and I know plenty of open world games that also use different maps. The Silent Cartographer is the only level I remember actually being wide open, seeing as you can drive the whole way around the island and go wherever you want up until you get to the indoors part.

The rest of the levels are essentially very large corridors, usually canyons, tunnels and bridges with maybe a few big round arenas in between them. You still need to move in a singular direction to proceed through the level.
Halo 2 was like this as well. There was room for different approaches since the corridor was so large, but it definitely was not open design like old keycard-door FPS games were.

Doom is linear as fuck. It was extremely rare that you could do anything but Blue Key > Yellow Key > Red Key in order (unless there was some sort of ledge runoff sequence break or a Secret Room that led into a quick shortcut), and the areas behind their respective doors were straight routes and/or loops right back to the door you came in. Any "open" parts (like many of the shitty DOOM II maps on Earth) were an aimless easter egg hunt until you found the key to open up the next area.

Doom 1-2's PROGRESSION is linear (ie: map1 > map 2 > map 3 ... plus the "get key to door A and B & C ...).

However, you are seldom truly funneled towards your next objective and item pickup. Instead, you tend to have a set of circular hallways, open spaces and other kinda open-ended paths, from which you need to locate the key items you need. If there is even such things - as there was entire maps that didn't exactly REQUIRE you to find keys, but instead switches and stuff, leaving keys for purely extra, secret areas, that were not crucial for your progress.

Meanwhile, NuDuum does just the opposite, and often even has the key item sitting right next to the door it opens.
