I mean there certainly is a grind in the sense of really wanting to get those high times on the leaderboards, but I wouldn't say it's a really unfair/aggravating to play like meatboy or N+. Once you get the movement down the game feels incredibly smooth flowing but on the way to getting good the music really helps in keeping the stress levels down. Most people only really have big trouble during the aptly named "difficults" and about 5 "gold key" levels right before them which will take quite a bit to get to. Personal anecdote: I played Nier back in 2012 and I like Automata's soundtrack better.

From my perspective, people that prefer the first game for anything but its characters are basically the same as the people that love Gen 1 Pokemon.
Nier's graphics are bad (the world geometry is PS1-tier at times), the gameplay is poorly balanced and lacking in finesse, the soundtrack itself is stellar but in terms of sound design it's not technically very good (sound files are linked to zones and events, nothing else), and then there's smaller niggles like the enemy variety being poor which Automata shares. I mean really, come on dude, they're both good games with outstanding soundtracks, but if you try to break it down Automata is just the better of the two.

What you propose is using some arbitrary, subjective measurement instead of sorting what it does well and what it does not do well. NieR, first and second, have very well-fit OSTs for their games, atmosphere and story. I'd say they're about on par. Nier has its inversion of a typical "save the world" JRPG plot, explored through the lens of a father that would give the world to save his daughter, but for the reasons I explained in >>387300569 I prefer Automata.

Got me there. Weiss/Kaine and Nier's dynamic is great. The Pods/Operator fill the roles of smack-talker and pedants in Automata, but for narrative reasons they didn't get much chance to shine; same with 2B being stoic, and 9S's inane ramblings. This is a limitation of the plot, for Nier was less focused so the writers had more time to inject personality. It's the counterpoint to Automata having a better narrative- character depth took the backseat a little. Automata's sidequests are more intuitive and easier to complete though; the game has no Pure Bladestone-style farming bullshit, for which I thank the devs.

They're pretty much equivalent, in terms of setpieces and the way places of interest connected. Automata is less of a pain to traverse with animal riding and fast travel though. It's also far less ugly.

Nah. Fuck off. Even in 2010 or whatever the "you were the demons" twist was already trite. The opening to Automata's Act 3 (from the start of War to War playing until the Titlescreen-drop) is a thing of beauty.

In conclusion: They're both good games and do different things better than eachother, but Automata wins out for being less of an eyesore/chore to play.

Automata is really good for what it is, a dive into absurdism, and with a powerful uplifting message at its core.
