I go to melee tournaments sometimes down here in Florida.
It doesnt smell like shit, it just stinks of weed. Mostly older players, a lot of +25 yrs old. They smell like booze, cigs, or weed, not much stank.

Smash4 tournaments, at the least the few Ive been to, do smell like ASS. But those have more of the smelly shits youd usually imagine when picturing this stuff. Mostly under 23 yrs old.

FGC events usually dont smell like anything since there's barely anybody there compared to smash events and the venues are a lot bigger, whereas smash people are forced into small venues like putrid sardines in a can.

The local I go to often doesn't have a problem with hygiene, thankfully enough. One actual problem I have with it is that like we have at least three consistent ragers that throw their controllers around when they lose in bracket. I made the mistake once of not showering for three days while camping and got jock itch. I've gotten it on rare instances before, but never that bad. It spread over the left side of my scrotum, smelled godawful (I didn't even realize it was me at first), and it felt like someone lit a match between the scrotum and leg. I took multiple showers over the next several days, washing thoroughly but carefully because it hurt so bad to touch it. I didn't leave the house and walked like a cowboy with my legs spread because I didn't want the surfaces of both areas of skin in contact with each other because of the pain the potential risk of letting both sides get more bacteria on them. Sometimes I even went with a disinfected wet nap stuck between them. It eventually died down, and I noticed that the skin on the left side of my scrotum was hard and dead, and I had to slowly peel it off over the next few days. The peeled skin wasn't smooth, and it seemed to have small bits of dried blood or maybe small wounds that dried up as I peeled it off.

I try to shower everyday, but there will be the odd day where I don't. I don't go out anywhere on those days though. It's not a chore to shower. You just stand or sit beneath the water and think about whatever while washing your hair or scrubbing your body. There's an odd satisfaction to feeling completely clean. I feel and look greasy if I don't shower, and I feel and look clean when I do. If you're going out in public, at least clean up first so that you don't smell like decomposing garbage.

The Sm4sh scene here has some pretty bad hygiene habits. People skip showers and just use deodorant as it's "a shower in a can". Shit does not cover up stale sweat well

There are only two reasons your skin becomes irritated after a shower.
