I remember playing DKC and Crash on demo units and thought they weren't good. DKC looked nice, but played like ass. Crash didn't look nice and it played like ass. I thought that if Crash was what the PS1 was leading with, I wasn't interested in anything it had to offer.

I own all three DKC games for the SNES but never play them. I never bothered buying any of the Crash games.

DKC is more consistent in quality I think. Crash 1 is rough around the edges and 3 has the vehicle issue everyone points out.
I enjoy Crash more and I'd pick Crash 2 out of all 6 of those games any day of the week.
