Like holy hell, the few new shit made me have to get extra tissues. Even the reworked shit was god damn glorious. I can confidently tell people that "lava reef was a good level". Remixed Ost felt like I'm listen to audio equivalent of ambrosia l. Huuuuuuuuugggggggh.

If they managed to do 12 unique zones for a sequel to mania to the exact level of quality, if not BEYOND, I would legit hand over my soul for that game. I'd kill a man.

I honestly think that all sonic games are pretty bad. There's nothing good about sonic games at all. The original games were very simple and I'm not even sure what to call them. Side Scrollers? That's really it. They sure as hell aren't platformers. The only enjoyable thing in the entire series was the Chao Gardens and Rogue. There's no appeal to sonic. He has nothing desirable. The only logical conclusion is that he does indeed attract autists.

You can't talk about Sonic without drawing comparisons to Mario, so I'll just give some examples why Mario is better. His character is more appealing. He's a cheerful Italian, a lovable design that can attract an audience wider than Sonic. He's human, as well. Contrary to popular misconception, animal like characters are meant to appeal to children only, not everyone. Humans are easier to idolize and relate with, so everyone can like Mario. His games are actual platformers with proper jumping controls, variety and abilities, power ups, hidden secrets and a meaningful coin system that keeps players going. Sonic has his ring system which loosely acts the same, giving extra lives, as well as acts as a health system, but it encourages poor play. Abusing the invincibility from getting hit to pass a frustrating area is one problem, which gives no real sense of danger because rings can be picked back up right after getting hit anyways for further abusing.
With Mario, you get hit with a power up on and it's gone. One more hit and you die. I feel like bottomless pit are used more in Mario games as well which sonic sorely lacks. Those keep the player on their guard.

There's just so much that sonic does badly or just doesn't have at all compared to every one of its rival franchises.

The only parts I found weaker were Press Garden Act 1 (only Act 1) and Titanic Monarch, and I still enjoyed those a lot. Everything else is pure gold.

This is a Sonic game with no low points, just slightly-below-perfection points. Maybe I'm riding a nostalgia high, but I feel this is a glorious game. I want to invent a time machine just to show it off to 12-year-old me. He'd lose his goddamn mind.

I have had 2 game crashing glitches already, the old sonic games I played to death and never had a single glitch.
I had an instance in flying battery act 2 where I was hovering, went through a secret area, destroyed a boz then it froze with a constant annoying sound glitch, sonic still in the air and timer still going. I had to press restart.

Then I had a glitch on press garden act 2 final boss. The boss was right by the animal capsule, when i got close to hit him he froze me, I landed on the capsule, act was over, score came up. i didn't actually kill him though, then I went flying to the right frozen while robotnik was showing his plans for silver sonic and eggstation but i was frozen and his animation just looped.
I had to hard reset. When I did and carried on the save I was in stardust speedway act 1.
Very disheartening.

I am enjoying it, but have quit at hydro city will finish tomorrow.

Blue shpere bonus zones are insanely hard compared to the older games and there are shit loads of them, plus they don't seem to repeat like they did so getting used to them will be quite tough, unless there is a mini game mode where we can play them.

Nah there's more greys in Marble Garden than green if anything. Nice mountains and nice Aztec-style palaces in the background. Nice small fruit-trees in the foreground, nice underground-ish/indoorsy parts etc.

It takes an artistic eye to appreciate it since it has a lot of subtlety...something that a zone like Press Garden completely lacks with it's over-the-top garish color palettes.

Falling through walls and floors is actually really not too common. On the 360 version; I had it happen to me once ever, and I 100%'d the entire game.

No. No they didn't. It's definitely a damn fine game, but it doesn't match the flow and excellent design of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Classic levels are a bit lopsided when it comes to attention. Stardust Speedway seems to have been given the most care while others like Flying Battery, Hydrocity, and Chemical Plant feel hardly changed enough. Also, the new levels aren't as good. Studiopolis is an amazing level though, so there's that. Press gardens is weak as fuck and the western level is over much too quickly.

Level designer on the sonic the hedgehog stream said that they based it on the birth of industrialization in Japan, so it brings a cool combination of Classic Japanese Architecture and Industrialized factory.

He also said Iizuka told them they had to make an ice level so they combined the two. While I'm not exactly a fan of Iizuka's meddling I think it was executed well at the very least.

Once you figure out that only the super combined robo can hurt you and not eggman in the final boss fight, and that if you're not hit you'll gain rings at a slightly faster rate than lose them, the final fight becomes really easy. Because even when you're in trouble you can just farm the rings in the eggman part until sonic has a good amount again.

I feel like in that part they should have just given you rings whenever you hit eggman instead of having them infinitely fly at you from fuck knows where. That way, if you hit eggman fast you can get all your rings back if you got hit once or twice, and it lends a purpose to his push away attack.

Also super modes are once again way too OP for normal gameplay. Everything short of the last couple acts you can basically turn it on mid act and blaze through both the act and boss without any threat at all.

Their story is basically that Ruby Eggman nabbed at the beginning of the game upgraded them with new powers and probably minds of their own since two of them are listed as female in their bios. The Egg Robos you see around the claw device become the HBH when the ruby does its thing.

What you have to do with Heavy Shinobi is hit it from underneath when it's jumping.

I absolutely love the Blue Sphere game (and it's horrifying to me that I remember every detail of the returning ones after 20 years), but I completely agree. It's a bit lengthy to show up so often.

I'd have maybe done the gumball machine at checkpoints, Blue Spheres for medals at in-level giant rings, and maybe the Sonic 1 rotating maze for emeralds at end-of-level bonus stages (though I guess you can't really do end-of-level bonus stages if there's mid-bosses after each act).

Favorite new stage? Favorite classic remixed stage? For me, Studiopolis was just fucking amazing. Had the best elements of what makes a sonic level fun. For the classic level, I'd have to give it to Stardust Speedway. Wasn't too big of a CD fan, but god damn is that level fun as fuck and the new coat of paint really makes the level shine.

Hydrocity was pretty damn close to Labyrinth Zone, at least in its first act. You were underwater practically the whole time, and there was very real danger of drowning.

Their approach was pretty clever, and a good use of resources. If they had just included everything from past Sonic games, it would have been bloated. This way, everyone wins in a sense.

As someone who is shit at Mean Bean Machine, it had to be pretty easy because this is a platformer, not a puzzle game. If they want to make a puyo puyo unlock with actual good AI then fine but it's too jarring of a shift to justify sticking in the main campaign. People who like platformers but avoid those sort of puzzle games would possibly get frustrated over it. I'm definitely glad the AI wasn't cranked up.

Don't buy a Pro Controller for the D-Pad - Nintendo somehow fucked up the thing they rarely fuck up on their most expensive controller to date - it is super sensitive at registering diagonals and up/down inputs when you are going between left/right.
You will have better luck with a 3rd party controller that is Switch compatible to find a good D-Pad.

I don't like the overly large cross style d-pads hori shares with the xbox controllers. I find sharp turning left and right to be far more responsive on d-pads that let you quickly rock from one direction to another. Whether that's the Saturn Model 2 or a Dualshock variant is up to mood and individual taste.

I personally find the dualshock d-pad to be the most responsive, like, ever. But it can wear the thumb down from intense use pretty fast. Saturn is best all around for comfort and usability.

I was excited as hell for Mania. But all the original levels are pretty bland. Mirage Saloon is half fucking Sky Chase, which is awful, and the stage itself flies by in no time. Press Garden has a stupid name and is a thematic jumble. Studiopolis had the most promise, but "Throw Sonic Everywhere" level design squandered it.

And Titanic Monarch. What the fuck were they thinking. This looks the most like fangame bullshit.

Nah if this is the best they can come up with, I'm not sure I want all original zones from them.

Why worry for the generators when you could get time stones though? I think I could easily see how the level layout would bother someone going for the generators instead and yet that seems to be the most popular way to go about it. I'm still shocked that Metallic Madness got such an immense overhaul. And the godly music just makes it that much better to boot.

It's not the transitions I care about it's cohesion. Going from a Louisiana Swamp to Mars is stupid but say going from Hill Yop to Mystic Cave is cool because yo think "Hey I just went deeper into the mountain"

If you consider the fact Labyrinth is right under Scrap Brain (In both version of Sonic as well) then Sonic 1 is a lot more coherent tham Sonic 2. Sonic 3 is a bit worse about this but they did bridge some of their weirder transitions with stuff like Flying Battery.
