Keep this to yourself, but I am very hyped for Samus Returns and have spent the last week playing through the OG Metroid II and Super Metroid to get caught up. Loved both of them. I think the remake looks great and I'm going to enjoy playing it on the 15th.

Hollow Knight not only set a new standard for art direction the way the map accounts for non linearity is outstanding, there are paths based around completely optional upgrades that accommodate and reward players who go out of their way to explore. The movement is also amazing, chaining together wall jumps and air dashes for platforming and combat is one of the most satisfying things out there.

I'm afraid after playing Hollow Knight I already know Samus Returns will be disappointing, MercurySteam is already a big red flag and from what we've seen this game doesn't seem to be made with the core Metroid audience in mind. It's just hard to be hype for the game.

I never liked Metroid 2, it felt way too clunky and cumbersome. I'm really not looking forward to this one at all, even with all the changes we've so far.

Buy the game, pirate the amiibos using amiiqo or a pack of cheap NFC cards from China. Tell Nintendo that this physical DLC shit isn't going to fly by voting with your wallet.

I started playing Zero Mission yesterday, it's my first Metroid and I just beat Kraid.

Yeah, all Metroid and Castlevania games are very short but have high replayability when you learn new routes and so forth. For example in ZM you can fight Ridley before Kraid if you want.

Super Metroid is the longest of the three 2D games but I can't see it taking more than 9 hours at most even if you are really meticulous and go for a high completion %.

I always find this an unconvincing argument. You should never buy a game you don't think you'll like on the assumption they'll make another game you'll like more later. If anything, success would just encourage this behavior. If the amiibo shit turns someone off, they're not obligated to get it. I personally don't care too much, aside from whatever the Fusion mode will have, because in game art galleries and music modes don't interest me much in these days of everything being ripped to the internet on day one, if not earlier. Especially on a system as busted wide open as the 3DS. Calling it an "important" unlock is a bit ridiculous, but it is something you could just unlock normally in the past. Obviously something excised from the basic game to give the amiibos something partially worthwhile to do.

I was even getting the amiibos, the new ones anyway, before any of this shit came out because I like how they look. Still am. But I completely understand why this shit ticks people off and turns them away.

I pre-ordered it because it looks okay.

I've never actually played metroid. Other than Ever oasis it's the only game I'm remotely interested in till november (USM)

Yes it's a CRT filter, I'm playing on my TV. I wish I had an actual CRT to play this on but this is as close as it gets with modern technology.

Shinesparking is when you press down during a Speed Boost to store it, and then jumping to do a super jump. After jumping, you can hold various directions on the D+Pad to launch in those directions. In Zero Mission (and AM2R) you can also Shinespark as a ball, but you need the Hi Jump (or Spring Ball in AM2R) in order to do that.
If you hit a slope while sparking horizontally, you'll go back into a run, assuming you're holding that direction still. You can do this to chain shinesparks. This is used to get a couple of expansions through Fusion and Zero Mission, and is famously used in the only Sequence Break in Fusion, but was caught by the developers so they inserted a bonus cutscene and then send you back to "do it properly."

You've got a special way of dealing with that. You're stuck there. You can't go back that way because the bugs that eat the plant are stuck up in the tube.
You're not really supposed to be going up there until you can get the Varia suit, which is nearby.
Your only option for escape is to go here.
You have to dive into the acid and traverse under the statue and pop up on the other side.
The problem with that is that there is another one of those plants in the acid. I'm sure you noticed the little bugs again that are just to the right of this screenshot. You need to get them to crawl on Samus, then bomb or shoot these blocks, move over to the plant so the bugs will move to it, and then hi-tail it out of the acid while they eat it.
Return when it's gone and make your way out.
There's a pipe that spawns enemies that you can use to replenish your health while you wait for the bugs to do their thing.
Of course, if you go ahead and get the Varia Suit, you won't take damage from the acid. The the way to the Varia suit is in the room just to the right of your screenshot. You just have to go up. But it can be mildly difficult for a new player to get it so early on without access to the Hi Jump, Ice Beam, and Power Grip.
