This weird revisionist history for the PS1/N64 era is troubling.

Everybody knew what the analog button did. It enabled and disabled the analog sticks. It made the controller act as an original controller or a dualshock controller.

Everybody knew you grabbed the N64 controller with whatever movement device you were going to use, Dpad or stick, and you didn't need to reach all three at once.

These controllers were like this because the analog stick was still untested and uncharted™ territory and they needed an oh shit eject button in case it didn't pan out. Primarily in Sony's case to ensure compatibility with the first 1/3 of their library as well.

Because those were code names that were discarded the second the consoles was officially announced. Like the Nintendo Dolphin, the Revolution, and countless others before them.

Plenty of magazines referred to the Gamecube by its product name too, GCN was commonplace. PSX was a name that stuck, and was used constantly in print media from 95 until at least 2000, which was the entire lifespan of the console. But hey, you can keep bringing up false equivalences instead.

Well the problem with that now is that there is a machine that is actually called PSX but is not the original PlayStation console. It is a PS2 even, with extra stuff integrated on it, but it never left Japan anyways. So calling the PS1 PSX now is just confusing the two for no reason. Even at the time, I believe it was just something people decided to tack on it, not anything officially from Sony. Otherwise why would they call that other PS2 a PSX, right?
