That fucking Crash game isnt even something new.

I think Mario will end up being the best, but Sonic restores some faith in the franchise and gives fans what they want, two things that Sonic really needed.

Crash remakes are pretty good, but nothing new

Mario looks refreshing and fun, looks like a blend of the best PS1 platformers with the best of Mario

Sonic Mania saves the day, but the shining light will be obscured by the shitshow of forces

As much as I want Sonic to win, Sega isn't quite there yet. Maybe next time we'll get Sonic Mania 2 with far more features + NO bullshit 3D title to distract from the success. Then Sonic will win. Mario wins.

They added regular levels because everyone thought it was a classical paltformer and not a bossrush.
Big surprise, the platform levels are uninspired and boring.
If only the Bosses were good it would have redeemed it, but the first two (the ones I played) were bland as fuck and less entertaining than the worst Mega Man bosses.

aside from the humans in that one area what makes you say that?

One of the big things I'm liking about SMO is that a few SM64 speed runners have claimed its one of the best controlling marios since 64/Sunshine. For platformers, movement is the most important thing for me so I'm thinking it's gonna be decent.

Crash had THE single best launch of any console exclusive this year beating out fucking Horizon. This line of thought that Mario and Sonic is untouchable is testament to howto you pretty much only Mario and Sonic exist.

As much as I liked the animation in those games, it felt like a downgrade from Wario Land 4, which looks far less impressive, but plays much better. Gimmicks didn't help either. Music was pretty cool.

This hype for Crash is going to lead to Knack 2 being a huge, multi-million selling hit.

Knack underperformed everywhere. It sold ove 1 mill because it was the only platform game on PS4 and because it was bundled with the console, but over all the reception was poor.

See the E3 reveal, Knack 2 is one of the most ignored games ever. Now compare it with the media reception of each new Odyssey trailer.

Enemies one hit killing you with EVERY attack, dodging back into each other and ranged enemies that track your movements when you have no similar means to combat them makes it really fucking annoying to play. On sales and brand power? Mario is a juggernaut and still remains a mainstream household name so he's going to win by default even if it has to be by pure attrition. Following that Crash because a sudden revival is big news and it was marketed heavily to general audiences and spread through word of mouth/streamer marketing. Sonic Mania can be the best game in existence and I think it'd still take third place because a segment of the population don't know the original Sonic games or they'll trash it harder than they did Crash for "old school mechanics" which we've already seen in some critical reviews and impressions. Sonic has also done a lot of brand damage that they've kept up while Crash had a cooldown period after killing itself off so a lot of folks never played the terrible releases.

Either way if you like 2d or 3d platformers this year has been a good fucking sign for the genres revival.
