Nintendo games and consoles in Japan always sell well,they go crazy for Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter in particular.

A whole bunch of VN shite, grindathon mobile games with gacha machines at every turn, and Japan-only mobile MMOs. They have awful tastes in games perpetuated by their workaholic lifestyle which grants them only free time in public transport.

In Japan right now. Barely anyone plays western shit. Dragon Quest just came out a couple of weeks ago so I've seen a lot of people playing it on 3DS recently. Suprisingly most of the stores around here sold out of the PS4 version and had a bunch of the 3DS left, even though I read that the 3DS sold double or something crazy like that. Also see Zelda a lot still.

Japanese here. In Japan there's plenty of people that appreciate western games, platforms like Steam have becoming more welcoming to Japanese little by little. But the great majority still plays mostly Japanese games, I see plenty of users always bringing sales charts, Japanese magazine reviews like Famitsu and similar, so you can get an idea.

Sometimes particular western games gain notable popularity, I used to know so many people that played Terraria for example, but it's still really, really niche in comparison to Japanese games.

Japan companies hold the rights for sale in the particular region, but have no desire to sell on PC because stupidity. That's one of the reasons I said little by little, few Japanese games on Steam have even Japanese text on it and sell globally.

It's fine for Japanese to buy western games though, ironically Steam is still not a nice place for Japanese to buy Japanese games.

Smart phone games are what everyone plays. Trains, cafes, walking down the street, whatever. Of course, Pokemon GO was big, and still is albeit not the craze it was.

Girls mostly play rhythm games, or card games. Lots of instant gratification shit. It's like an entire country filled with normies who love more interactive, colorful, and addictive Bejeweled variants, as well as more ethereal-feeling Guitar Hero games, if that makes sense at all.

My first girlfriend here loved Bloodborne, and Nier. My current girlfriend likes playing Tekken 7 with me. One of my students was a police officer, and most young police officers are sort of military-otakus who are capable of leaving the house, so he and I play Battlefield 4 sometimes on PS4, and apparently many of his coworkers play the Battlefield series.

Outside of that, Japanese people like Japanese things. That extends to the games they play. My young students all have a 3DS or Vita, or both. They fucking love minecraft, though, the one constant I've seen from all the kids' selection in games is minecraft.

Online I mostly hang around Japanese people.

Mobage is by far the most common. Westaboos exist but 9 out of 10 times they have awful taste in western games (modern only, AAA, flavor of the month, even memeshit). Fans of any generation of Nintendo are common to find. Non-mobage JRPGs, galge / moege etc. fans are less common than you think. "PC master race" culture does exist to some extent (Steam is pretty big there and a common complaint is that they're region locked out of a shitton of games... even Japanese one, and that Japanese translations are often either horribly broken or cost additional money.). VR is fairly popular as a whole.
