Besides that, there was a music glitch the same person encountered where there was no music until after he returned from a Special Zone. The mean bean machine part is pretty gimmicky and kinda ruins the speedrunning potential of the game due to the RNG it adds. I'm pretty familiar with mean bean machine, played it a lot on the genesis, but the first time I came up to it in Mania he randomly got a gigantic combo on me early in the game and filled 3/4ths of my screen with black blobs, and there was no way I could come back so I died. Kind of a lame inclusion to be honest.

The only sub par stage in 3&K to me is Marble Garden IMO. The floating enemies, the swinging ball traps, and some small parts of the stage design all punish fast moving in an annoying way. That and the boss for Sonic in it is annoying due to his kinda wonky hitbox.

I always see people whining about how "video games are dead" and all that malarkey and I don't really understand it. It's like they weren't here for the 2008-2013 era of video games where there was literally nothing and everybody just played TF2 because it was the one non-brown game on the market that wasn't made by Nintendo.

Sonic has core design to back it up, playing MGR on the hardest difficulty or going for perfect mission ranks just makes me sick at remembering how stagnant it made the game. It doesn't enrich the combat, it just artificially bloated the difficulty by emphasizing a couple of one-dimensional aspects of it. At least with Sonic and time trials, you're attempting to use basic momentum and platforming skills to get through a beautifully-crafted level as quickly as possible. Honestly, this game has so many great tracks.
Even before the game came out, I really liked Green Hill Act 2, Chemical Plant Act 2, Studiopolis Act 1, and Mirage Saloon Act 1. Now with more coming out, I also like Studiopolis Act 2, Flying Battery Act 1, and Stardust Speedway Act 2. Its getting hard to find a bad track in this game. Its amazing. THIS is how Sonic should be and feel. If they regressed to making Sonic Mania sequels, with this quality of music and levels, I would be fine with it. Maybe take more time with them, make new levels the majority or go half and half, and it would be a franchise worth buying games for.

I beat the game as Sonic and Tails. Game is amazing and the original stages are beautiful. Got 4 Emeralds but I couldn't find any special rings as I got into the later stages.

What are the knuckles mode differences? I've only beaten it as knuckles but what i've noticed:

-mirage saloon act 1 seems almost entirely unique. Lots of sections requiring gliding and hanging on the side of platforms
-lava reef takes a detour back to the hidden palace with a unique cutscene of knuckles worried about being electrocuted again (does sonic even fight the same boss?)
-lots of bustable walls with goodies inside like rings and shields
