Let's be honest here, who used the Chao Garden to abuse the stuff out of the Chaos? I recall the fleeting sentiment of simultaneous guilt and excitement, flinging unsuspecting Chao harder than Bertolucci flung Schneider's acting career. Watching them weep and get the spiral of grievance above their heads was also quite fun. though I could never bring myself to murder one, however.

May as well repost the mechanics and whatnot. This is really why they haven't done a new garden; even they know they can't fuck that one up.

There's more to the Garden mechanics than a lot of people think. Blue animals raise intelligence, and Gold animals raise luck. When I say blue and gold, the base of the animal's portrait is what I'm referring to.

The personalities? They determine the base luck/intelligent stats. Crybaby is the worst, not gaining any of the two whereas Naive is the best, being able to get the maximum amount of both stats. Short Temper gets double luck but no intelligence. Picky Eaters only eat their favorite fruit fully, anything else gets two bites. Curious Chao have bad luck but double intelligence. Big Eaters love to eat, but the hunger stat goes down twice as fast.

Chao get sick if they stay in the water for too long. You'll hear them with strange sounds and looking like they're hungry.

One Chao year is three real-time hours. They die at five years, but with strong fruit you can max them at seven years.

The fruit you can buy or grow have effects, too. The soft fruit, I believe lowers intelligence but raises the stamina bar x2. It's been a while. Heart Fruit cuts the lifespan of a Chao, Chao Fruit I don't think does anything special and it's likely just a regular treat. The shape fruits are just that, and likely tied with personalities.

I never saw it myself, but if two Chao are with one another from birth and breed together they become close, as in doing things together. The type determines what they do, speed Chao race together, Power Chao spar, Fly Chao fly together and Swim Chao Swim.

You can make a bully Chao by abusing it and praising other Chao near it. At some point it becomes angry and pouts at you, while picking on a preferred Chao or any other Chao. Alternatively, if you don't get a bully you get a timid Chao that cries and runs away, and eventually dies off. In some cases you may get two bully chao that invoke ignorance and chaos together. Again, I've never seen this but the original source was spot on with the rest of this stuff and it wouldn't surprise me. With certain colors and a base Chao, you can get a lot of special colored Chao.

But with the types of Chao you get is based on animals. Yellow is Swim, Red is Power, Purple is Fly and Green is Speed. You can get a normal Fly Chao with Purple animals but if you were to give it Red animals around three years of age, it would change its appearance. With Strong Fruit, you can extend its life and then give it Yellow animals to get another mixture along with it. You would have to forcefeed it Strong Fruit nonstop.

Strong Fruit lowers intelligence. I don't remember what Soft Fruit does. You can use the former on a Short Temper Chao and not worry about the loss of the Intelligence stat. On the note of personalities, Naive is the best, doubling intelligence and luck while Crybaby is the worst, capping at 5 each.

Personalities change as well. An Energetic may become a Short Temper or a Crybaby could become a Short Temper. Curious may become Naive. Naive Chao hate being alone, and will breed with any other Chao, regardless. Big Eater is self explanatory. You can feed these Strong Fruit as well, and get a good boost on the Stamina stat.

Another personality is Spoiled. Spoiled Chao will have a certain connection with a character and will want their attention nonstop. If you neglect them, they will cry. If you acknowledge another Chao, they single it out. The only plus from this personality is they always reincarnate if you fall into their facade. In order to avoid this, make them get their own fruit. Put them down near one and hope they go for it. Keep doing so until they approach it.

Back to the colors. You can get some neat looking Chao with the solid colors and shiny colors. If you want a Sonic Chao, you can get one with a blue Chao breeding with a base Chao and make it a Speed Chao. You can further this with making it a Speed/Speed Chao as its second type(doesn't change its type, just adapts a new appearance based on what you give it)and giving it longer quills.

You can make a Shadow Chao with a red Chao and base Chao and raise it as a Dark Chao. With every type of Chao there is an alignment, you have a lot of possible colors and appearances for one. It takes a long time to get your desired results but it pays off.

Jewel Chao are the Chao you get from the Tiny Chao Garden in the Sonic Advance games. They're expensive and unless you have the games you'll need to grind the minigames from the temporary Garden you get with a GBA Link Cable and an empty GBA. I got the Emerald Egg, and I think it was the cheapest one you can get at 5000 Rings. I got a transparent Two-Tone green Chao from it. You can also transfer the Tiny Garden fruits as well. Each lowers a stat while raising one, too.

The Gold and Silver Chao you get from SADX aren't Jewel Chao.

You can dig in the Gardens with Rouge and Knuckles and find Pumpkins and Skulls. Both go for fifty Rings. You can sell the eggshells from the Eggs for some money as well. Jewel Eggshells pay out a lot. You can even sell the eggs you get by breeding, if I recall.

The Black animals can add or remove animal parts from your Chao. Kappas turn the Emote Ball into a flame, Bats remove legs and add a ghost tail and Skeleton Dogs remove animal parts altogether. They give balanced EXP for all stats.

You can clone your Chao if you put it in the Tiny Chao Garden, and move said Chao to another save file. Take that Chao copy out the GBA and put it back in the game and then get the original Chao. You'll have two of the same Chao.

If you boost one stat too much as a child, the Chao when it evolves will go down a grade. An A rank goes down to B. If you leave it be around 170-250, it'll go up, S being the best and E being the worst. I got a Chao with all E's and an S in its stamina stat. Thankfully it was a catalyst for the Shiny Two-Tone Chao I was breeding en masse.

If you have a Chao from SADX that likes Amy or Big, if you transfer it to SA2B, it'll draw pictures of said character.

Animals have certain traits passed down to Chao. Cheetahs make them breakdance, Tigers make them clean their faces and Dragons make them breathe fire. Said traits can be seen in the sibling games. The fire will have a SFX with it when it happens in SADX.

Birds allow for better singing in addition with their traits. Dark Chao by default can't sing unless taught from the preschool. Hero Chao give a bow and a "Hi!"as a greeting and Dark/Normal Chao give a thumbs up and happy eyes.

You can see the fruit and trees you plant grow slowly if you zoom the camera in on them. Something neat to look at, nothing more.

If you're going to make a Chaos Chao, you must have that Chao reincarnate twice and you must give it only one of each animal and NO Chaos Drives or you'll have to do it again from the beginning of its life. Alignment determines what you get.

That's about the gist of it. The hidden mechanics of the Chao Garden to this day are mostly unknown, and without the programmer who did the original games, making a new one would be futile, unless they reworked it entirely from scratch with someone else.

There's definitely more to it than that. My VERY FIRST chao had nothing but love for the entire 10 plus years I played SA2B and it disappeared one day. I was so crushed I didn't play more for the longest time, especially since my other chao was lost in a crash while loading/saving the results of a race.

It was there again when I came back. Lost its stats but kept its adult appearance. I love my Zoa.
