You roam around a city occupied by covenant at night, looking for your squad because you guys got separated when you dropped. When you find clues about where they are you play through the experience as them. It's neat but kinda turns into a marvel-esque squad of quippy soldiers which, while fine, sorta isn't what I expected from the game by watching the trailers.

I expected a game about hard motherfuckers. The book ODSTs were psychotic, ex-con warriors that took absolutely no shit, not even from spartans. In game the first thing that happens is buck and his ex girlfriend are bickering or something? I didn't dig it at all. Seems like people only like it because haha! Nathan Fillion! He's so smug xD

I was expecting discipline and humanities best and instead it was just like, a lovers spat during an alien invasion and a squad of jackoffs who apparently had read the games script and knew they were in no danger. The thing is you can have personality without having all the characters act ridiculous. Little things have far more impact. Virgils symbol smiling and then frowning for example. The lines he sneaks in like "keep it clean". I loved that shit. I wish the whole game was just the Rookie, i wanted a band of brothers type thing, but barring that, id rather have it just the rookie than what we ended up with. It was too silly.

nothing in the game even fucking impacts the franchise, engineers are never mentioned or used ever again, nor is virgil, everyone in the rookies squad dies/quits except for buck, who was only brought back for halo 5 so they could have a charming celebrity help sell copies, not because he does anything for the game.

You could tell Bungie had run out of ideas for Halo with it. ODST and Reach brought nothing to the franchise and are easily forgettable. The good news for Halo 6 is 343 is putting the focus back on Chief and said they are taking a step back on the campaign so the Squad gameplay may be dropped (thank god).
