They bungled the free launch so badly.

The game was already a laughing stock, then the free to play part came around but rather than call it free to play they simply call it a "free trial." This causes people to see it and think that it's just a demo or limited time thing, not an entire free game, so they don't bother with it. This also causes the game to not be put into Valve's free to play section or be advertised at all.

What's your favorite video game blunder? For me it has to be Evolve because I would have hated to see a full priced game with f2p-tier DLC succeed, and No Man's Sky because I think it made a bunch of people more careful about pre-orders and randomly generated content

That's the other half of the problem, well beyond the game in general being shit. The free version doesn't include the PVE modes, just PVP, so you're going to be fucked against people with better items. So, there's very little fresh blood coming in because the launch is poorly advertised, then the small amount of people who do come in leave afterward because the game is shit and they're stomped hard by people who have better gear then they do.

And let's not forget some of those devoted players who were playing before it went free also quit when they learned it was going free and they were hardly getting shit for it. With Gearbox moving onto this Project 1v1 thing I can't imagine the servers will even be up this time next year.
