I don't really have a problem with it, since it added some competitiveness to see who could complete runs the fastest or whatever, also meant you couldn't just do 12 ascensions in one day.

I'm familiar with Kingdom of Loathing but I never actually played it. Is this a good game even without the background or does most of the enjoyment come from knowing what you're getting into?

it's a classic RPG and the funniest game of all time, IMO
but you have to have patience and appreciate the style
do some of the opening quests and see how you like it, a lot of people i know drop it fairly quickly

I'm a KoL fanboy but I thought WoL was bretty gud. It's not way too difficult if you don't make it difficult for yourself e.g. minimizing the number of days on hard mode, but it's still enjoyable for the variety of options you're given and the humor.
