It's not a bad game, it just doesn't deserve universal acclaim as the best RPG ever. That said, it's my 2nd favorite TES and I thought it was a fine game going by TES standards.

Out of all of the open world games you had to pick those two, Witcher 3 is subpar in every gamey aspect, its only good at 'cinematic' parts. BotW has a completely empty world, you can find shrines and korok seeds there is hardly anything unpredictable, because of the way weapon durability works, weapons aren't rewarding and armor hardly even matters. I unironically think Skyrim is better, the lore is better, there is much more to the locations, there is more to the locations and better things to find (like permanent passive buffs or unique artifiacts.)

I love the game and have played both Vanilla and Modded for pathetic amounts of time, so here's my take on it:

It's definitely shit. A giant open world that's mostly non-threatening is a recipe for boredom, if not depression. It's like they shoved a conventional game in a giant empty map. It's bad enough wandering around dickless little towns and cities without any danger or excitement around the corner, but there's way too little happening everywhere in the world map to be exciting. It's pretty boring at any given moment.

Combat is shit for a pile of reasons, but being able to instantly spam potions without repercussion is a bad one. Quicksaving is a shit alternative to a real save system. Sorting through piles of containers and chests for junk is pure filler (a LOT of this game is filler). The sidequests are just little distractions that don't add up to much (a dealbreaker with open-world games, really). It's more like a singleplayer MMO than anything else.

It's also not very visually appealing.

It's not any worse than Oblivion or Morrowind. Bethesda has been full of incompetent idiots from the start. Bethesda did the smart thing this time by making front loading this game with polish and a seemingly vast unpredictable world. Normies are impressed by this one because they don't play long enough to realize the game is trash like every other Bethesda game

I modded the hell out of Skyrim and it still wasn't fun. No matter how much you mod it, the games major flaws still remain. The overworld is mindless walking. Everything you fight becomes easy after you hit level 15 archer. The quests and dungeons are some of the worst I've ever seen. NPCs spend 10 minutes whining about their problems only to finally give you a hint to a preset quest. Every NPC has the same 4-5 voices. Reading lore in books is horrible since it should come from NPCs or exploring the overworld. Even with mods, the world lacks variety.

Basically the archery and music are the only interesting parts of the game.

Those things are not mutually exclusive in the slightest. Stealth archer mode is broken as fuck, never mind if you're buffing it with gear from a smithing/enchanting/alchemy loop, but it's still INCREDIBLY dull to do any fighting.

When all you're doing is effortlessly murdering people with single arrows at absolutely no threat to your personal being, it's still a fucking chore for the sheer number of mobs you have to slog through.

Skyrim has the worst lore presentation and world building I've ever seen in an RPG. Only a couple daedric quests were interesting. The way Witcher 3 presented a war torn land, a minor part of Witcher 3 but the centerpiece of Skyrim, was infinitely better. Locations are a grey, ugly mess of snow and ice. Witcher has more variety along with a Skyrim-esque viking location done better than Skyrim.

It's the kind of game you can pitch or demo really well but if you spend any considerable time with it you realize just how shallow it is. This premise has also become a really popular trend. Virtually every Ubisoft game nowadays can be described this way.

Coming from someone who loves the game, it's got enough content to keep you engaged for about 40 hours or so, but it's an 80+ hour game. Too many things, despite being theoretically handcrafted, feel the same, and the enemy pool is too small to offer proper variety over the course of a really expansive game. Most of its issues can be ironed out with modding, which is where people like me end up with 500+ hour save files, but as a standalone title, it's not perfect. Not bad, mind, but unpolished in many places, and not as tightly wound an experience as titles like The Witcher 3. The best thing it does is the same thing every Bethesda game of its nature does; plop you into a big open world with lots of little things to engage and impress you, and leave its engine flexible enough to mod to your heart's content.

It's not a bad game by itself, people hate on it because it's a step back in many ways in the TES series and dumbed down. Get a couple hundred mods on it and you can have a great time, but that's not everyone's cup of tea.

The UI is the only significant problem, imo.

Minor problems for me include the scale of the world and cities, how quickly you rise through many guilds, and how the game offers little in the way of variable approaches. Dialog is normally not an option to avoid conflict.
