One of the SaGa games kinda does this with one of the character stories you can choose. Can't fucking remember which one it is.

Something about your character and his brother both becoming mages and midway through the game you fight each other to the death in order to absorb the power of the other and become an ultra-mage because normally learning one school of magic locks you out of the opposite so you both decide to cheat the system. You learn one set of schools and he learns the other in preparation for this.

Even if you lose the fight and die the game still carries on with you playing as the brother instead. You both have the same end goal as a ultra-mage.
