Gone Home is currently $4.49 on Steam currently docked from a price of $20. I recently completed Firewatch and was looking for another cool exploration game. I've had my eye on this for a bit but am a bit worried about the length and amount of content. Would anyone here that has played it recommend buying it now?
>>
>>387178321
watch the 1 minute speedrun then decide.
>>
>>387178735
Wouldn't there be spoilers though?
>>
>>387178321
I got it for free, and I regret wasting my time. There is no exploration, no mini games, nothing to really interact with. You walk around, open doors or drawers, and look at objects to get exposition. I explored everything and it only lasted for 2 hours, with a story that doesn't even have a resolution. If you don't value your time, go for it
>>
Play the Doom WAD instead
>>
>>387178321
absolutely not
>>
Got it free and it was worth it the one night I played it. I like rummaging through things, so rummage simulator was ok.
>>
I got it for when they made it free in protest of Trump becoming president. Not quite my type of game, but if you like walking around picking up/setting things down it might be worth a spin.
>>
>>387178321
The story is shit, the game is short. Paying anything for it is a waste, even if you somehow like walking simulators.
>>
>>387178321
No. It's not worth any amount of money, if you can get it for free then yeah it's alright it's a nice sweet little story, but otherwise do not bother
>>
>>387178321
when your current walking simulator is having problems and you have to advertise for your old one by posting about it on /v/ repeatedly
just read a yuri vn
>>
>>387178321
>Firewatch

At least this game had cool art direction. Gone Home is a waste of time.
>>
>>387180293
i'd even suggest firewatch over this, even though i think the writing of firewatch is bad; at least the voice work was good and the visual design was okay
>>
>>387178321

After so many times seeing this vid, I finally looked up that IGN review. Fuck me, that was painful to read.
At least on metacritic there's still hope

It's walking simulator
>>

stanley parable is a better walking simulator lol
>>
It wasn't worth it when I got it for free. I can enjoy a good story but that shit was just plain boring. It's like they had an idea for an event, but that event only last two hours, and the gameplay doesn't support the story in the slightest
>>
>>387178321
Play the Unfinished Swan instead, that ome at least has a neat gimmick

I think I remember it being free but apparently I didn't grab it, and I don't remember why.

Did getting the free copy require some annoying bullshit like making an account somewhere other than Steam/GOG?
>>
>>387185478
pretty sure it was a ps+ free game last year
>>
>>387185904

Maybe that's what I'm remembering. It would be the simplest explanation for why I don't have it on PC even though I usually take every free game I can get. But I thought I remembered it being free on PC at some point, and deciding not to download it for some reason.
>>
>>387186157
i think it was a twitch prime reward, but i don't even remember when
>>
>>387178321
I got it for free and still feel like I was ripped off. I played for about 20 minutes trying my best to judge it for myself, but /v/ was right. It's shit. Unbelievably slow pace, shit writing, shit plot, shit gameplay. I hated every second of it, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone even if it was still free.
>>
>>387179069
no, you can literally stop watching when they click the last thing and not be spoiled. speedrun skips 99% of the story beats anyway. in fact just mute the video, then you're completely safe.

on this note, i lost the video of the guy microwaving the hotpocket during a gone home speedrun, and getting back in time for the timer. /r/ that.
>>
>>387178321
If you absolutely need to play a shitty walking simulator just pirate Soma, because at least that one is half interesting except for the garbage voice acting.
>>
>>387178321
Amount of autism in this thread made me lel.

Gone Home is ok, shorter than firewatch, and probably less fun compared to it. Still a nice game.

If you want to play really cool exploration game, try What Remains of Edith Finch. It's great.

>terrible writing
>terrible acting
>boring game
>buggy as fuck
>100% linear
>20 minutes long
>twenty united states dollars at full price
>universally praised by critics
you're a moron if you think gone home is more than a 2/10, and thats very generous. people here have a right to be reactionary to this game since we've all gone over how fucking awful it is a million times by now.
>>
>>387178321
The big twist was that the person the protagonist was looking for was a lesbian, right? So like any good story, does it offer any clues before its eventful plot twist? Or does it come at you like a brick wall?
>>
>>387187394
I think so, you find your sister's diary or letters or whatever that keep mentioning the classmate she likes, and there's the message on the answering machine. You kinda put 2 and 2 together.
>>
>>387187394
There was no twist you just walk around the house and grab notes or some shit and listen to how she fell in love with this other chick
>>
>>387187108
I'll bite, just because I'm bored

>terrible writing
Give me examples.

>terrible acting
Average indie acting. I've heard worse.

>boring game
I've enjoyed it.

>100% linear
Mario is a linear game too

>20 minutes long
at least 2 hours if you take your time to read and explore everything.

>twenty united states dollars at full price
can't defend that. Price is stupid.

>universally praised by critics
Mario is praised too.

not really

>>

it's ironic and by ironic i mean a manipulative sales practice

>>387188430
Irony is a form of comedy, not drama. That's why this game feels like shit.

>You can open the penthouse and finish the game in one minute because that door is always open.
>>
>>387187569
>>387187613
Well if that's the case, I would prefer even a shyamalan tier Plot twist. What is so interesting about reading a person's lesbian fantasies? I don't even think you meet the person ever in the game. It sounds like the most safest attempt at drama possible.
>>
buy Quern instead
>>
Your sister runs off to be with her lesbian lover. Saved you a few $.
>>
>>387188902
>What is so interesting about reading a person's lesbian fantasies?

The in-story reason? The main character comes home to an empty house and is trying to figure out where her family has gone, and just sort of stumbles onto her sister's problems. Beyond that, its mostly the developers stroking themselves over being "deep" and "meaningful" over gay representation.
>>
>>387188902
There are no people in the game
Just you walking around a misleadingly creepy house
I got the game for free and was still disappointed, but I'll be honest and say I did find the lesbian story cute, it didn't feel as forced as some other ones I've had to sit through
>>
>>387189151
So you never even find your family in the game? or where they're at?
>>
>>387189540
They fucked off somewhere
I can't remember where the parents went, but the sister ran away with her girlfriend

Sounds pretty boring then, especially with how the other anons said it was misleading with its creepy vibes it originally game off. It's a game where the end matters the most, but doesn't deliver and plays it safe as possible.
>>
Its alright, I got it for "free" with ps+ and it was mildly enjoyable, little short, the house should have been a lot larger, akin to Resident Evil sizes.

Get it if you like those kind of games, but Firewatch is better.
>>
>>387190195
He never played the game, there is nothing to respond to.
>>
>>387190252
it's not even a game. it's just a really bad episode of cold case by rejects from 2k games
>>
>>387190403
Except I did, and it's true.
>>
>>387186157

It was on itch.io.
>>
>>387190252
Don't form your opinions from /v/, anon. You'll end up retarded.
Game puts you in a shoes of someone who came back home and catching up on shit that has happened to your family. Creepy vibes are similar to that weird feeling you had as a kid, when you wake up, but your house is empty and you wonder around looking for anyone, curious and a bit scared. You know that they probably went to a store, but deep inside you think... What if they just disappeared?

And if you're not into story focused games, than yeah, you'll find it boring.
>>
>>387191170
remember that time you came home from college and went through all of your family's shit to find out where they went, instead of making a bowl of cereal and watching television
>>
>>387191314
Well the game's set in a different era where communication wasn't as convenient
>>
>>387191451
Which is why you make yourself something to eat and chill out until people get home.
>>
>>387191451
trust me, i'm grading it by the era it's set in
