More friends
You can have a bunch of playable characters without completely altering the entire game by just having slight alterations to how they play like you already have with Tails and Knuckles
There is basically no reason you shouldn't be able to play as Amy/Rosy, Espio, or even Shadow
Amy can whack shit, Espio can turn invisible temporarily to avoid damage, Shadow can skate across gaps for a few frames

Advance 2 and 3 did that pretty well. Totally unnecessary in Mania since it's trying to appeal to regular people instead of today's Sonic fans, that's what Forces is for.

They were a problem in Adventure/2 because Adventure was a poorly designed game. Selectable characters (best example that comes to mind is the bonus characters from super meat boy) shouldn't be a problem if they're handled properly.

Look at the huge cast of the Mario games, they're what makes Mario interesting. People who want the same few characters to ever appear in Sonic forever will then turn around and complain about the toads in modern Paper Mario.
