When the scientist asks you what you want done with the cave, pick fruit bats. Fruit trees are VERY expensive early on, and you'll need certain fruits to complete the community center. It's not fun having to wait until Fall Year 2 for a damn pomegranate.

Save all the hardwood you get, it's hard to get it later on in the game when you need it most.

Don't bother mining unless it's a luckiest day, or an unluckiest day if you wanna farm coal. Fishing is a great way to make money at the start, fishing in certain spots will give you a gold quality fish 100% of the time. One spot is at the log in front of the mine.

Aside from birthdays I saved all relation building till year two. Worked out great. First year was pure farm/mine/lumber gathering.

Its a farming game about relaxing and escaping your boring life to enjoy country life so treat it as such.

Definitely focus on your farm the first year to get a good amount of money, get good money crops and livestock, and get your skills up. (Best crop would be blueberries in the summer with Speed-Gro or Deluxe Speed-Gro since fertilizer only works on the first blueberries for your harvest.) What killed me is that even in winter he's sleeping in his tent. I was seriously disappointed because I expected him to get a little place in the back of the tavern where the boxes are. Would have loved a quest where you can get him back to a job and to live somewhere else.

Pick community center, don't do the stupid warehouse shit. Community center forces you to interact with every aspect of the game and it's a great meta-achievement to strive for, I honestly think it's the thing that makes SV work better than the games it's ripping off.

Also get a horse and try to finish the minecart section of the community center as quickly as possible, it's annoying losing half your day to just getting around.

If you don't like the recent HM games, Stardew Valley is a lot like the older 2D ones. The farming is great. Combat is kind of boring, and it's not really an RPG, so if you want more RF you're out of luck. It's better than RF if you're looking to farm and on par with HM. Waifu wise it's worse than both of them, but it never bothered me.

Best advice in this thread. Stardew Valley is one of my favorite games of all time because of its extremely relaxed pace and the endless freedom to do whatever the fuck you want. Enjoy yourself OP, explore every NPC, complete the community center, git gud at fishing, get to the bottom of all the mines. Whatever you do don't get caught up in making excel spreadsheets to micro manage your automated farm. Fastest way to kill your enjoyment of the game (unless you really, really like that sort of thing, in which case go for it).
