I like the series, but after playing Yakuza 1 and 2 first and going straight to 3+, the writing took some nose diving, man.

I don't know about 5 and 6. 6 trailer seems to indicate an crazy level of coincidences in the writing, which is never a good sign.

I always wanted to get into the Yakuza games, but the combat of the one I played back in PS2 just felt wonky as shit?
Has it improved?
The game looks amazing visually and the new combat I've seen looks so over the top and fun.

It is and it isn't. Part of the problem with prequels is that you know where the plot needs to end up. If you've played the first game and especialy if you've played several games in the series already, you already know that certain characters are/aren't around and can take obvious guesses as to what will happen to them. It really kills a lot of the suspense and drama when character X gets beaten/shot but you know that character is just dandy in the rest of the games (or vice versa) and kills moments that are set up to be twist/surprise reveals resulting from those events.

Basically, there's something in there for both camps but the two never mix. If you've played the other games, you understand the references shit to later games but you lose out on the suspense and surprise setups. If you're coming into this as your first, you miss out on the references but because you don't know anything that happens in later games, everything is new and surprising and the suspense is retained.

The motion blur and bloom was on the PS2 yes, but the ghosting I'm referring to is different. If you stand still in the streets, light sources will appear to bleed and leave a short trail behind them. I suspect it's the bloom fucking up in the emulator.

The Yakuza games are like this weird mix of adventure, beat 'em ups, comedy, drama and minigames all packed up neatly into a tiny sandbox area.

And it's fun. If I were to complain about something it's that area transitions and the core system can be a bit clunky at times. Better graphics too but that isn't that important.
