I bought 3ds XL in 2013 and almost never used it, firmware was 4.20 something, can I install CFW without flashcart fuckery or do I need to buy some 3rd party shit?

True, but downloading hundreds if not thousands of dollars of games definitely helps the budget. The barrier to entry is absurdly low, it adds convenience, and there is very little risk.

I understand the morality of purchasing games, obviously, but pirating adds so much convenience that it's easy to understand why people do it, even with well paying jobs. Video games become an expense that you NEVER have to make, which allows you to allocate money elsewhere.

They haven't done any bans since that large wave months ago. If you get banned, who cares? Takes less than 10 minutes to unban yourself, and there's always a public code to replace any banned one.

Is there a solution for increasing your firmware version aside from having a cart with the proper firmware update now?

I went through the motions about a year ago and got as far as downgrading before realizing my SD was too small to finish, much less store any games to play. Now I'm stuck on whatever version the guide said at the time and can't find my Smash cart.

I'm only curious, can't hold a 3DS for more than a half hour with both hands anyway.

I suppose I don't care enough to research. This was around the time Nintendo was trying to stay on pace with the exploiters and current firmware was a death sentence to them, so I didn't consider the official update an option.

Aside from DDD and Planet Robobot I couldn't give the slightest shit about CFW on that thing. Can't use the 3DS long enough to possibly play Monster Hunter, despite still using my PSP for everything it can handle.

I don't know how well documented the Supercard DSTwo's card commands are. Acekard 2i is the first one to support magnethax because its protocol is fully and freely documented.

Compatibility will be improved but it can't be perfect.
The patches used to load from the SD card are extensive and complicated. A real game or a flashcard works perfectly fine, but just the 3DS's SD card is a glitchy minefield.
