Honest thoughts so far?
>>
looks like shit
>>
It looks like every other Mario game.
>>
>>387142965
Hopeful but ready to be disappointed.
>>
looks like fun
>>
>>387142965
Looks amazing, combining the explorative elements of the 64 and Sunshine while maintains the linear platforming aspects of the Galaxy games.

Why are the skeletons Mexicans?
>>
>>387142965
even tho nintendo still insists on making super low end hardware that is just not fair priced, this looks great
at least they are not being low effort on software now
>>
>>387142965
none because the game isn't out and i haven't had a chance to try it myself yet
cautiously optimistic i guess
>>
The level design hasn't had me jumping out of my seat or anything. The design of the game reminds me a lot of Yooka-Layle, where you have this huge open world with some points of interest, but a whole lot of nothing. Characters talk when I kinda don't want them to be guiding me, and the worlds aren't brimming with much creativity. Maybe it's the music, but I'm sure it's the uninspired worlds. Still want to play it though, but I'm not all that excited. The game hasn't sold me yet.

Based on trailers I see Z E R O reason to doubt that Odyssey will be a masterpiece. From gaming news sites, the only thing that makes me uncomfortable is how there won't be any lives in Odyssey. Outside that seeming lack of difficulty, I'm very excited for it to come out
>>
>>387142965

i like the idea of world travel, i like the idea of mario possesing thing, it looks like they actual put creativity in it rather than doing the usual "plain/desert/snow" dance and still have the game be claimed as creative by idiotic journalist
>>
>>387143604
The worlds themselves really aren't that big, they just have a bunch of platforming segments hidden in them.
>>
>>387142965
Garbage shit just like Sonic Mania, Crash N. Sane Trilogy, and every other game /v/'s been shilling for the last few months.

the reason i'm buying a switch and the only platformer out of the big three that i'm excited about
i've this feeling that it's gonna be the most criticized tho, since it's the one that deviates most from its original design (despite strong elements from sunshine and 64 being present). i can already see a situation like botw where a fair amout of people will go with the "yeah its a good game but not a [insert name of the series] game" special
>>
>>387142965

The trailers looked exciting but the actual gameplay demonstrations are pretty boring.
>>
>>387144034
That's just one part of New Donk though, right?
>>
>>387144589
The underground power plant could be another area akin to the deep woods so yeah.
>>
>>387144569
Right? The reveal trailer was brilliant. The actual game however... Meh. Of course I need to play it first, but I'm not really feeling the modified controls. Looks kinda slippery.
>>
>>387144569
Well when most of the gameplay is just Mario walking around of course it'll be boring. Platformers are really boring to watch unless it's a speedrun or accompanied by witty commentary.
>>
>>387144782
modified controls?
>>
>>387142965
Looks fun. Nintendo haven't released a 3D Mario I haven't enjoyed so I have no reason to believe it won't be good.
>>
>>387144476
(despite strong elements from sunshine and 64 being present)

Besides the triple jump and vertical level design, Odyssey is more of the same from the Galaxy and 3D Land/World games. It's segmented into 3-D over world and 2-D platforming sections.
>>

How can people who play and talk about video games know nothing about them?

This is the biggest problem of /v/.
>>
It looks pretty boring from the trailers, but going back and watching the first galaxy trailer gives a similar impression to me. There's really nothing unique about anything in this trailer. It looks like 64 with rounder levels. There's a solid 30 seconds of just mario flying through space. Looks boring as fuck, but I enjoyed the hell out of Galaxy, so I'll probably like Odyssey.

They recently changed the boxart to include a snippet of the kingdom and its probably the part in the trailer where mario turns into a cheep cheep.

They also released this art of it. Each kingdom has a different colored moon and purple has not been in any of the other kingdoms so it confirms this is its own thing.

The only area that even remotely fits this description is the desert area (and even that is kind of a stretch). The city and the forest area both looked rather densely-packed.
>>
>>387142965
Hopeful but worried about:

Mario's movement options because the game seems to focus heavily on hat throwing and playing as other NPCs. I really don't want a limited moveset like 3D world.

Amount of levels

Voice acting being as bad as sunshines

Music. Not that big of a fan of the jazz ost from the trailer

Too much unneeded dialog and text. Every demo I've seen there are instructions popping up whenever you mind control something. Shit just let us figure it out ourselves

A random part of the game which was used as miyamoto's experiment for his new game

DLC
>>
>>387147816
That's like saying MGS V is not open world because you can go to Afghanistan and Africa. Fuck you faggot. The game has all of the problems open world games have, no structured level design, and huge expanses of nothing.
>>387147907
You don't need copy pasted content to be open world and we have no guarantee that's even true because the game isn't even out.

I do get a very big yooka laylee feel from this game, which really isn't a good thing. None of the levels look like they were designed for fun, but for walking around and solving problems. I believe it's also taking a page from Botw and just outright forgoing a game just to make all the casual gamers feel good. Not impressed and will be skipping.
>>
>>387148052

Yooka-laylee was pretty good, the problems were more on the technical side, but they were almost all solved with the most recent patch and now the game is pretty great.

If you didn't find Yooka-Laylee fun then that type of game probably isn't for you. "walking around and solving problems" is what you do in 3D platformers.
>>
>>387148324
>Of course I have

Then how the fuck can you compare this game's design to modern open world design when it's literally the same design used for N64 and PS2 era platformers?

>the game has all of the problems open world games have

Care to list some?

>no structured level design

Wrong. Just watch https://youtu.be/27SWKUt_Cus and you'll see that it follows Mario 64's design pretty closely

>huge expanses of nothing

False. This is only the background of a good 3D platformer. I've played many platformers for many years. Nay, many 3d adventures. I know a game from its footage and screenshots alone. Then if we compare current Nintendo to old Nintendo, we realize there's no way Odyssey will match up with the game design of old. And I guarantee you guys are going to get DLC out of this. There's nothing genuine coming from this project. I'll be skipping another mario game as Nintendo approaches closer to obscurity. Wake me up when their motto isn't to jew customers with amibos and low quality games. Which will be never.

>marketer
>shilling old Rare games is being a marketer

Rare was always better than Nintendo when it came to most games. The only games Rare will never beat are Super Mario Bros on the NES and Mario Kart. But everything else in Nintendo's category has always been middle of the road in quality. They gave up on making good games after the NES, and I will even say the snes when they started to drop off. Then by the N64, they sort of got their act back together, but by Gamecube, that started falling again. The problem with these waves of the past is that the cycle of good and bad never came back. Nintendo has been stuck on bad ever since.
>>
Dont really understand this "Theres no platforming!" or "There's no level structure!"

In this video alone there are several platforming segements and there is a clear, designated path to follow that leads you to the boss of the area. Its nothing like yooka laylee where you have no direction.

>Mario's movement options
backflip, crouch slide, long jump, belly dive (albeit with slightly different input), cartwheel, wall kick, vertical pole climb/vault, ground pound, and triple jump all returning from 64.

ground-pound-hop, spin, and spin jump/slow-fall, and horizontal pole swing are all returning from later Mario games

You can also somersault speed-roll with an automatic long jump out of it, which is added, as well jump off your hat.

If you disagree, you're either a grown manchild who never parted from Nintendo or underage, yes. Games have became sullen over time. I've seen their rotting from NES to now. Devs use less features, they are too safe in their designs which goes double for Nintendo, and all their passionate team mates are either not on any of the frontlines of the dev teams aka the ones making all the direction decisions or have left the mainstream industry to go pursue mobile games or just normal jobs. Game journalism took a hit, too, with this cultural shift of gamers. You use to have more intellectual and detailed reviews from people that played the game. Anyone who just stopped at the first level cause it was too hard were shunned upon, a stable of today's game reviewers. I can keep going on this, but you get the point. tl;dr I don't have to prove shit to you.

What really interests me is the fact that every level seems to have a day time version and night time version, like you get one grand moon, then it switches to night time and things get more intense. >>387150546

You didn't though? You just cried about "not muh NES games"

The game plays just like a step-up from N64 platformers. It's literally the same gameplay and level design with updated graphics.
>>
>>387150516
The weird worlds have been used in past mario games and possession is Nintendo's way of adhering to all the open world kiddies who want to be able to play in different ways to keep their adrenaline goes. Remember modern Nintendo does not trust their core fanbase to keep attentive which is sad. The current Nintendo audience only care about two things: that's its Nintendo and the game doesn't challenge you.

SM64 was a giant tech demo at most. That game is overrated af. The art design took a dive due to the very basic N64 3D and they didn't even try to make constructed worlds. Remember, they were coming from games like Super Mario World and SMB3 which btw SMW was worse than the NES games.

>>
>>387150823
You have a shrewd definition of game mechanics. More doesn't equal better, but even if Mario had the same amount of actions as he did in the previous 3d marios, it doesnt mean they will be necessary. You can get by SM64 with the most basic actions. Everything else is just there to add options on top of your movement capabilities, which only the most autistic ended up using for their speedrunning.
>>
>>387150516
Each world seems to have a peach's castle element (where nothing dangerous exists and there are NPCs to talk to), then immediately attached to that is a larger more open 3D platforming world a la 64/sunshine with one "main goal" at the end, and sprouting off of that and/or the hub are shorter very deliberate 3D-world-style platforming runs.

It's actually a pretty smart way to design a Mario level. It rewards exploration and also supplies quite a bit of focused platforming while still being generally pretty open-ended and slow-paced, with lots of room to dick around.

I'm not so sure about the Banjo-Kazooie-style puzzle elements (come back with a business suit to enter this building, transform into a bullet to break this wall); I liked Banjo-Kazooie but I imagine not all Mario fans did.

>>387151398
Thats just a product of today's audiences. This goes for most industries. Since things have matured, people have a good feeling of what they trust now as far as movie, cosmetic products, etc. The problem of course is that it's so ingrained in them that one brand can never be bad that they never take a step back and re evaluate if the standard of quality is kept up. Not to mention, since brands continue to cycle in new generations, those new generations will say the old ones were wrong and the brand's loyalty is refreshed. This spell can only be broken by competition, but Nintendo really acts in its own bubble. It can't have a competitor because no one is going to be as relevant as the Mario/ Zelda brand. They hold too much cultural integration, which can only be matched by an equal brand that is just as old and with that much nostalgia power, which is little to none.

Pianta Village
That Galaxy level that was just floating toys in some giant kid's room

I'll grant that a city block full of skyscrapers on top of an even bigger skyscraper is sort of strange, but it's far from the weirdest thing they've ever done.

>>
>>387151916
>-whatever is new sucks
Not true, but an industry with degrading standards will tend to have a relative downhill of suckage. Games should have gotten better in their design when tech became better, but there's old games that are better than games made now simply because they werent too lazy to include an actual game.
>>

I don't think we need to worry about how good it's gonna be since they've never made a mario game that was outright bad. There'll be bitter old fucks that are gonna shit on it no matter what but I remember when 3d world came out most people were shitting on it til it actually got released, and most people enjoyed it, even if it wasn't true '3d' mario.

Nintendo also said that Botw would be more in line with the original zelda, but look what happened. They brought back nothing from there, dungeons are absent, and it's just one big world that you walk around in but never experience a game. Let's not forget that the original zelda is the worst game to try to copy, as it was a bare bones adventure game on the NES, which is one of the reasons why it was more of an excuse than an influence.

The movement is great but the levels either barely make any use of it or are just flat out not related to platforming at all.

Why am I popping balloons on a rail shooter?
Why am I moving a watermelon?
Why am I giving Chain Chomps a bath?
Why am I getting thrown around by Piantas?
Why am I on a boat with the worst controls ever using FLUDD to propel myself?
The list goes on and on with that game but the skill ceiling for it is quite high if you just like to mess around and the stages without FLUDD were great.

No, Im a guy who played Zelda 1 on the NES and had more fun with games like Ninja Turtles, SMB, and other such classics. Zelda wasn't great until the SNES game refined it with better looks, more features, and a more refined combat system. Dungeons improved, too, from just "block wall/ kill enemy" design to what we see now. Then Botw happened and shat all over that with making people play around with physics puzzles that make the typical kid toy look genuine.
