Who are the greatest video game villains in your opinion?
The greatest villains are the ones that are executed well, regardless of what their motivation is.
>>387139101
Perfect tier: Villains who are evil in order to be good.
There is nothing wrong for being evil for the sake of evil.
Dio is one of the most iconic villains in japan and he was just being a cunt.
>>387141834
Jojo is a shitty meme. And Dio was a lackluster villain.
>>387139101
The best villains are those that think they are doing the morally right thing but cause suffering that they deem necessary for the good of all
>>387141536
how is Postal 2 Dude a villain? All he wanted to to is get his paycheck and buy some milk
>>387141834
Dio wasn't evil just because, you grow up with a dad that shitty you'd have a hard time not having a broken moral compass.
>>387139101
The one's that are written well. You could have the thing you called "god tier" and it could still come out looking fucking stupid as fuck.
>>387139101
You could use any of the tropes you listed and still have a decent villain if you execute it the right way. It's all about the context those villains exist in and the writer's skill.
>>387140038
This. You can't save the world without sacrifice and destruction along the way.
>>387142164
Not to defend Dio and his shitty actions but he claims that he really didn't care about his dad being an asshole, also in the manga he admitted that he poisoned his own mother because he felt that she was weak.
What about villains who are your buddy?
>>387139101
It all comes down to execution.
But I'll say your highest tiers have a high chance to appear ridiculous if handled badly. Can't go wrong with the bad guy being a jerk just for the sake of it.
>>387140038
>the bad ending is the true ending
Why don't games do this more often?
>>387141536
>Postal dude
>Konrad
>villain
Nice
>Shepard
>Mendes
>Didn't do anything wrong
Replay those games and come back
>>387142420
Motivation is his motivation.
>>387142159
Assuming he is the guy from 1 he single-handledly murdered an entire town.
If not, he is still a murderous psycho on a kill run.
>>387139101
You forgot
Elder God Tier
>Villains whose goals are arguably more right than the antagonist despite their methods.
>>387139101
Anon, your chart is flawed. It places almost every Sly Cooper villain in the Good Tier, for example. I'm a massive Sly fag, but even I know that's bullshit.
>>387139101
>the joker falls into low tier
Shit list kys
>>387139101
KEfka
>>387139101
Vayne from FFXII. All he was trying to do was free humans from the oppressive machinations of the Occurria.
What about
>Villains who are evil out of necessity
The highest tier will always be
>Villains who are only in it for the money
Literally the best motivation. Hell, doesn't even have to be evil, heroes can be after the dosh too.
>>387142390
>raised to backstab like a rat
>treated like shit
>probably raped
>taught ethics that led to him killing his mom
>smiled and Jerked off when his dad died
I'd say his childhood wasn't good.
villians that think that they heroes are the worst
villians that think that they are villians are the best
end of discussion
>>387142707
I haven't ever tried it, but I'm pretty sure you can beat Postal 2 and never kill anyone.
But since you have the tools to kill, players just impulsively start spraying everything that moves. It's a funny commentary on video games.
Oh, it's a "villain who did nothing wrong" thread, i see. Hello there!
Villains who are evil to go back in time and save his family.
Villains who do this and all negatives will be erased.
Villains who knows ow they are fucked up and just misses his wife and kids.
Best villain?
I personally hate people like op
Because of you games becoming safe space where you can't see a true, horrifying evil
Only some edgy shit if developers wants to add shock value
>>387139101
Super High Tier:
Villians that were in the right, but people still call him a villian for no good reason.
>>387143710
I have no idea how you think that is OP's fault, but the reason you do not see well-written villains is because it is a challenge to write such a character, and because there is no payoff due to most games being targeted at wide audiences composed of many people who will not appreciate the character depth because they are only playing for the graphics or action.
>>387143396
Fuck off, Wakfufag.
>>387139101
Liquid
>>387139101
Sephiroth has stupid motivations but he's pretty popular. He must be doing something right.
>>387139101
the real god tier are villains who aren't actually evil at all, except maybe in the protagonists opinion
>>387143943
OP posted garbage tier list, so he at fault too
This is literally cancer that media trying to force in your minds and faggots like op and >>387143765 will gladly suck any cock for more
Dutch from RDR
>>387144305
Fuck Marche.
>>387144328
To what end? Which do you think is more likely:
The media is collectively conditioning people to like poorly written villains.
or
An idiot made a list and OP used it because he needed an image that was related.
Hint: Use Occam's Razor.
Seifer is GOAT
>Starts off arrogant, fucks up his exam thing
>Becomes jealous of squalls adulation, opposes them because of that
>becomes more and more delusional as the game goes on, starts to believe he's in the right etc.
>his appearance visibly changes - coat is falling apart, hair is ruined, he looks shittier as the game progresses
>at the end he's been exposed, tells his buddies to leave and but keeps being evil out of spite - destroys Odin.
Yeah he kind of becomes good again at the end but he's such a good character.
>>387139101
I don't agree with the description of 'Low Tier'.
Wilhelm Strasse from the Wolfenstein series
>>387144761
Just a fever dream of dead ass squall.
>>387144809
You could kind of say the world wronged him, since the only joy he can experience is from doing evil.
>>387139857
This.
By OP, this would be LOW TIER
But Blight is Elder GOD TIER
>>387144761
I wish he was the protagonist. An asshole who becomes less of an asshole but is still an asshole.
>>387144827
forgot pic
>>387144910
aswell as these 2 creeps
>>387144809
Kotomine isn't evil for shits and giggles, he tried literally every alternative and he decided that for once he'd live for his own happiness
>>387144761
That was undeniable proof that we TOTALLY owned you lamers.
>>387144761
I mean, he wasnt wrong, Cid totally was giving preferential treatment to Squall
>>387144618
Dutch is a perfect example of why a good motivation doesn't mean shit for a good villain.
>>387139101
>>387145443
Probably because Squall could follow orders
Also villains are better if they're right about some things so this probably helps Seifer in terms of being a bad guy.
>elder god tier
The vilain is actually a better person than you, and his motives make more sense than yours
>supreme tier
The vilain is actually an ancient deity that doesn't care about humanity and its morality.
>Villain actually means good, it is just that his means are fucking atrocious and evil
where would this fit in the list?
>>387145684
depends if he has a change of heart at the end and stops or becomes increasingly more delusional and bad as the game progresses
if first then mid tier, if second then god tier
>>387142740
>villain is literally unstoppable
More games should do this.
>>387142740
cool concept but his design is god awful
Best is
>who you think is the villain is some other dude. You blamed the wrong guy and he has just been defending himself from a rampaging psycho.
>>387144761
>that moment when he one shots fucking Odin
>>387146015
Game?
>>387145507
underrated post
>Villain is just trying to prevent a bigger, more dangerous evil from devastating the world
easily high tier here
>>387146015
Hotline Miami?
>Try to do the right thing and protect someone
>Everyone sees you as a villain
>Including the person you're saving
Didn't deserve anything that happened to him, at all.
>>387145550
>supreme tier
>literally an ancient evil awakens
No.
>>387139101
>Judging by motivations rather than execution
Why do people keep posting this fucking garbage tier list?
deus did nothing wrong. Genocide is okay if it saves humanity
Arthas
>>387147701
>Lovecraftian shit
>evil
No
>>387147420
>gameplay is an even less playable earthbound clone
>"deep" story that no one can shut the fuck up about on tumblr and other normie sites
I'm fucking tired of hearing about this "game" and how "deep" it is.
>>387148065
okay
When I found out her reasoning, I almost cried.
>>387147989
Oops, I meant a neutral being. Might as well be an ancient evil.
>>387141536
Armstrong had child soldiers.
>>387148128
Nice passive aggressive response. Do you think people want to hear about your shitty indie "game" every thirty seconds? I'm getting fucking sick of filtering everything related to Lisa.
>>387142107
Came here to say this.
>Villains whose motives are hard to find fault in and arguably better than the hero's.
>>387148357
Did you play the game?
>>387148357
Try using your filter, you whiny idiot.
>the villain wants the same exact thing as the protagonist, and both are even willing to fuck everything just to get their goal
>>387148357
Looks like you're the one coming from tumblr
>>387142740
>wants to end all of existence because he's sad his waifu died
>/v/ loves him
I really need to get out of this place
>>387139101
9 to 5 villains are the best.
>>387148479
>let me just repeat someone else insult that will show them
Typical Lisa fan. Play some real fucking games.
>>387147945
Shame he didn't realize he just needed to keep bullying Asura and he would have solved everything on his own by punching everything.
>>387141536
t. manny pardo
the sexiest detective alive
>>387148420
Yes, and it confirmed that it uses every stereotypical indie "game" trash troupes out there and again, it's just an even shittier earthbound clone. I bet you like Undertale and Life is Strange as well.
>>387141959
>Jojo is a shitty meme
Jojo was adored on /v/ until the anime got popular.
>>387141834
Dio literally had a troubled childhood. It turned him into someone who desires money and power, which spiraled out of control when his schemes unraveled.
He's not a good backstory villain, he's just a cocky fucker who is fun to hate.
>>387144998
>>387144910
>>387144827
Neck yourself
>The events of the story cause the villain to feel remorse/regret/shame etc. for what he has done and seems to be turning a new leaf.
>At the last moment he doubles down on being a completely heartless dick because he feels the world has fucked him over too many times.
Luv dat shit
>>387148357
>>387141536
>Loghain
>Nothing wrong
Aside from treason, stubbornly underestimating a world-ending threat despite evidence to the contrary, killing and outlawing the only people capable of stopping said threat out of pure spite, hiring a fugitive to murder an innocent man, selling people into slavery, and almost causing his entire country to be destroyed.
>>387142925
you forgot
>eldest god tier
you play as the villain who's done horrible things pre-game and everyone you fight is just trying to stop you
>>387146334
>>387147149
This.
I'm sure there are a few others too.
>>387148820
So were Undertale (albeit briefly), Minecraft, and Dark Souls. This entire site is full of contrarian hipsters that dismiss many things due to them being popular enough, you should be aware of this by now, anon. Only once in a blue moon will someone who actually dislikes these things bring up valid reasons as to why they don't like them without contradicting themselves or parroting opinions of others.
>>387144761
I get this feeling that Seifer is a "what if" of a standard shounen protag in a more grounded setting. Or at least a setting where his blind idealism doesn't save him in the end, but rather leads him into ruin. He gets really far out of pure talent and hard work, but he's bound to make poor decisions because he lives by what he thinks is cool and his ROMANTIC DREAM. That tends to be the hero's deal.
>villain and protagonist are literally the same person
I don't know how to tier this.
>both only want to protect their loved one
>villain is the bad guy because he's the one who needs to take the protagonists loved one to resurrect his own loved one
>he's also coincidentally tied to all of humanity being restored to their bodies
>no matter who wins, thousands of souls will "die"
>Skip to the sequel, all of humanity died anyway.
>>387149258
>you play as the villain who's done horrible things pre-game and everyone you fight is just trying to stop you
Do you have any examples of great games that do this? Could easily make for decent gameplay
>>387149258
Planescape?
>>387149407
He's more of a Byronic hero, where his pride leads to his downfall.
>>387149515
Furi did this.
>>387148065
okay
>>387148814
soo, you didn't play the game...
>>387149481
Black Scrawl would have ended up ruining it all anyway
>>387139101
>DUDE, morally just villains are so great maaaaaaaan
I will not believe this bullshit "tier list" when I've encountered so many awfully written villains who are "more right than the hero!"
Skull Face will always be a shit character and shit villain that was not saved because they were "wronged" while I can say characters like Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising) and Vergil were fantastic villains despite their motivation being "I want power"
It all comes down to how the character is played out, take your fedora "all villains need to be morally grey!" bullshit back to your hugbox
>>387139857
The great thing about Luca Blight was that it was never confirmed that the beast rune was responsible for his sociopathy. He reveled in being evil way to much for me to believe he was ever good.
>>387142707
It's not his fault the entire town got in his way, anon.
>>387148814
Troupes like what?
>nobody is in the wrong but so is everybody
>>387149562
see >>387149796
definitely in my top 10 favorite games
>>387139101
>>387145270
Holy fuck kh2 flashbacks kek
>>387150861
>unsheathes RNG
>instakills you
psh...nothin personnel, vending machine
>>387149907
Stop fucking talking like you are on Facebook, faggot.
>>387143361
The biggest thing BoF4 did wrong was not allowing Cray to literally beat Yuna to death with his bare hands.
>>387151159
Quit bitching and ignore things you don't like.
>>387150326
Wasn't it the rape of his mom that fucked him up?
>>387151187
No, allowing him to survive reinforces the message of good ending.
You either spare everyone with Ryu or kill everyone with Fou-Lu. No inbetweens.
>>387151704
If he was always a sociopath then the rape wouldn't have fucked him up emotionally, it would have just pissed him off.
>>387139101
Necessary evil villains are great most of the time
>>387151742
Screw that. If I have nigh-unlimted power than yeah, I'd probably give it up and allow the other gods to leave the world, but I'd be fixing some shit first.
>Resurrect Mami
>Bring back Elina (if possible; her condition might make it harder)
>Split with Fou-lu and let him live out a more peaceful life with Mami
>Track down that piece of shit Yuna and leave him in a magic-proof room with Cray for 20 minutes
>Restore Ursula's grandpa and formally hand power to him on the condition he seek peace with the eastern kingdoms
>Renounce divinity and live a mortal life as a mortal hero.
>>387141536
I mean I like Daud as a character but accepting a contract to kill the empress is still pretty wrong. He kind of admits to that during the low chaos playthrough as well.
>>387152589
As far as i understand dragons weren't really reality benders, just incredibly powerful beings with control over elements and enough wisdom to guide mortals.
>>387143180
Think that falls under being a villain because the world wronged you. If you have to be evil out of necessity then the world almost always fucked you in a way.
>>387144761
Seifer is the best "villain"
He's the videogame character I can relate the most
The very definition of God Tier
