I only play like less than a handful of VNs (and not intending to get through a lot anyway), but the one I really like so far is Koiken Otome.
It definitely wasn't anything special, from the theme to characters or music, but I just enjoyed it a lot somehow.

Currently trying to get into Eden* but I haven't got time to read it. Wish I can properly learn Nipnong so I could read Walkure Romanze and Sengoku Koihime though.

I can understand that logic, only time I actually skipped an entire common route was in Dengeki Stryker since the common route was so large and barely had any changes. So for something like that, I can see the reason for skipping. VNs like the ones KEY make usually have a lot of variety in the common route though, with some of the choices, while not necessary, can add build up to the route you're going for, so skipping those is similar to skipping half the story. I guess in the end it just depends on what VN you're reading and personal taste.

VNs are a mix between novel and movie. The music, visuals, and in some cases voice acting gives it very distinctively different emotional pull than just a picture book. Try watching a movie that's been edited to remove all the music tracks and you'll see just how different of an experience it is.

For that matter, try playing a VN on mute and you'll certainly get less out of the read if it uses its music well.
