Its a great game, well worth the price. Its one of the rare early access games where it isnt a shae to trick you out of money. Its got a pretty decent community too. There is often a general on /vg/ around update time so check there every so often.

There are pretty much 4 main paths you can take
>Cargo pilot
Fleet will mostly be freighters and escorts. You will take commissions like pick up 300 X and take it to Y within Z days. This can be very profitable but you will end up fighting pilots after your cargo.

>Bounty hunter
Fleet will combat vessels with a ship or 2 for cargo and fuel. You will spend most of the time hunting down pirates from bounties that get posted. Pretty fun an good way to get money early game.

>Pirate
You will be raiding trade convoys and picking off weaker patrols, fun but more challenging to get going since most people will hate you.

>Explorer
You will spend time exploring distant star systems for valuable planetary surveys and abandoned research station harbouring high value weapons and gear. There is also dormant but powerful AI fleets hidden is systems you might wake up.

>Salvager
Following faction wars and searching distant star systems you will be able to scoop up some great derelict ships that you can restore and build yourself a free if slightly beaten up fleet.

You can't make a custom ship but you can determine what weapons it has as well as change its characteristic with hull mods. For example >>387132395 is geared towards close range brawling but it can equally be geared up for long range defensive sniping with a different weapon/hullmod loadout.

You can pretty much do what ever you want and there is a plethora of mods for more ships and added content.

You don't create ships in it just customize them. But you can mod the game so you can make anything you want. There are some mods that add a ridiculous amount of weapons and shit you can put on them, also tons of faction mods that add tons of ships
It's a sandbox, no true objective

It is a fun game. Even more so when you get used to it and put in a mod like Nerexelin or Dynasector, which expand game's options a whole lot. With them, you can take planets, the missions are more in depth, the economy is better, etc. The guy making the game made it in mind with the mods from the start, so they mesh well with the game without trouble.

Last I played, there was one that could pass as that. But you could also install a faction mod, Templars something I think it was called. Their ships were OP shit when I tried them, but some anons convinced me that they make for fun enemies. You really have to work to beat them.

There is also a mod faction that's quite alike Imperium of Man with ships similar to that, I think they call crusades too.

This game has been in development since 2010, so at what point do they call it done? Not sure about buying this in its current state, mostly because there's no clear plan to release the game as a finished product.

Last I played I always seemed to get stuck at a stage between being too large to catch smaller fleets yet too little to fight bigger fleets, a sudden gap where there was nothing I could effectively engage. Was that just me being shit or was that a problem that's been ironed out some?

Do the tutorial, it doesn't take too long compared to the average lifespan of a save and you get some ships for free. Alternatively, find out which factions are having a go at each other and camp out wherever they have outposts in the same system - you can easily pick up derelicts that get spat out from their fights.

For lods of emone, take derelict scanning missions and invest in salvaging and surveying then sell survey data at Sindria in the Askonia system, and AI cores at any Tri-Tachyon planet. You will have effectively infinite money that way though, and late game you realise it was pretty much pointless and that you're locked in to now-worthless skill points when you could have been a cool and manly chad with marginally higher weapon damage.
