imo it looks worse without it, since it adds a blue tint to distant objects that is visually appealing, like a painting. It's more a shader trick than a literal fog. That said, some areas in the game (namely Faron Jungle) overdo it, making them look murky.

(that pic was an example of it looking murky btw), one thing I've noticed when taking screenshots is the game looks at its best in the evening, especially sunset, due to how the lighting can change dramatically throughout the day and based on weather. In some regions, you get an incredibly thick fog during rainfaill and in the early morning, I assumed this was due to technical limitations, but confusingly if you reload a save during rainfall the fog will be gone for up to a minute - so I can only assume the fog/mist is purely stylistic.
