Yeah the missions themselves are great aside from the Protoss campaign not wanting you to destroy enemy bases.

Lots of people hate the epilogue though, I love the concept and I actually really like the first mission in it.

Also, WoL has two branching story paths. Blizzard said both the left options are the canon ones but only one of them gets acknowledged in the future and it's a throwaway line so it hardly matters.

Go play WoL and then HotS, there's an extremely sharp drop in quality in missions and it's not just that the game actively tells you not to destroy bases. Because not destroying bases is just to cover for the fact that you're playing a wave assault game rather than an RTS.

BW is not much of a smart game as much as it is a hard game because you have to overcome the mechanical cliff and the general clunkiness of controlling your units. Lots of quality-of-life improvements that wound up changing the game in unexpected ways, with design that didn't work sufficiently to counteract those changes. The most obvious one:

These are both improvements on the surface, but it's not without side effects. I have literally no clue how bw works or how to play it. In SC2 now and back then aswell there was some kind of meta. Something that was almost expected of you as a player. For example for ages it seems terran has been opening up reaper FE against terran and protoss and maybe a 3CC hellions against zerg. I've played and watched the game and when I see a player reaper FE against a protoss i understand why and what advantages it gives (good scouting , worker harassment). When i watch BW my mind is blank. I have literally no idea what's going on. I see someone wall off with a supply depot on python and it works. I do the same thing and i get fucked with a 6 pool.

Terran has the hardest micro and big timing pushes. AT low level you can play mech vs zerg if you like timing pushes more. Terran has the strongest 200/200 army as well.

It hits a wall in terms of shit apm and shit micro playstyles. Like you can start beating worse zerg/terran right away but you have to develop mechanics, etc. There are protoss at highest ranks.

It's like if there is a gun in an FPS that takes the least aim. Of course as a new player you will be great with it, but you have to develop aim even with it to get the max DPS from it. So to improve with protoss takes the same effort as improving with T or Z, but because it's EZ mode to begin it takes a while to hit new plateaus.

Like in broodwar ladder in USA/Europe, it will be covered in shitty APM protoss who just wing it.

It's both. Like fighting games, you have ti grind out the muscle memory so you can actually do this shit without thinking, thus allowing you to do some actual thinking on cross-ups and mind-games.

Imagine how the game will change once neural imputs with advancing queing is a thing. Say ordering SCV's to build a bunker and barracks once enough minerals are in and the barracks will instantly start filling the bunker. All off of one order that took a quarter of a second to think.

APM matters but only up to a point. You'll play a lot better if you focus on getting down your mechanics right and using your units correctly more than APM spamming but not having a plan behind it. Some of the most legendary BW pros kept their APM around 250 like sAviOr and iloveoov, so don't obsess over it.
