I don't like playing as main protags very much, feels too vanilla. I want to play as someone who's different but not super gimmicky. That's why I also play Maxwell sometimes.

Speaking of this, what are the good modded chars? I remember some sounding neat but being too broken to be actually fun. Main example being the chick with 4 hats where 1 lets you cover basically the entire world in 5 mins because super speed and 1 makes your damage so absurdly high (4xI think) and rewarded you so much for killing you could completely ignore the entire game other than murder and live purely off killing spiders and pigs.

I don't bother with mod characters. They're either absurdly overpowered or...absurdly overpowered. I don't think I've ever seen an underpowered one.
Besides, the base game has enough characters as is. There's a little something for everyone.
I do wish Klei would finish those final characters they have in the code though. Can't remember their names but one was a Skeltal and one was a demon.

How do you get past the Deerclops? I play don't starve together once in a while with friends, and we always die in Winter because of that fuck.

I've built trap fields to lure him into, frozen him with freeze staff, tried kiting, but he gets us in the end.

No love for Wendy and Abigail? Combat's definitely the weakest part of the game, so she makes the game much more fun for me.

I like how in DS when you look at the map the game pauses so you can plan what to do next. I couldn't do that in DST as it didn't pause so immediately that was a huge turnoff. Also no penalty for dying was stupid and ruins the immersion. Just went back to DS.

learn to kite or at least dont let him hit you 2 times in a row, you will get frozen on the spot
you know when he spawns, so prepare a couple of days beforehand, build a new set of armor, helmet and spear

I generally don't, since nightmare enemies are among the easiest to kite in the game thanks to their literal inch wide hitboxes, but if I do want them gone I just cook and eat cactus flesh. Then make it grow again via my book, cook some more and refrigerate it, removing any need to every worry about food or sanity and as a result of spamming book having infinite most resoruces in effect.
She has the best start in the game, is always 1 step ahead of anyone else during the game and is one of the only characters whos bonuses are actually relevant at all once you've reached the end game and are self-sufficient. I do think the body builder is better, but he lacks her charm.

The cat characters mod (Wisp, Winter and Wei) was good, but it hasn't been updated in forever. For some reason I prefer playing hard characters, so long as they don't have the hunger drain, so Wei was perfect

Wilson is best. I go underground as soon as I can to harvest bunnymen, so I deal with freezing much earlier than everyone else before winter. A full beard helps a lot with exploring when this happens.

Chop down enough trees until you spawn a treeguard. 1 big one should be able to solo him so get him to follow you an de aggro. Have 1 person kite and one person be in charge of fires. You can use spider dens too but be careful because they might eat his eye which is really useful. He's really not that hard to kill
