JUST IN CASE, this isn't bait.
The fact that you can kill him is optional if you are dedicated or in your case, oblivious. The "intended" path is to run past him because you don't have a good weapon yet. The design is meant to tell you that big enemies could appear anywhere at any time. You got the big hammer as a reward for killing him at this point because in general, only players who are experienced with the game would bother doing so. Also.. not having enough stats at your character's first level is a poor thing to complain about. You'll level up and be able to use it if you want.

Does Dark Souls have levelscaling? SBH states in one of his videos that you shouldn't invest souls in improving your stats because the enemies become stronger with you.
