Light in and of itself is a spark of individuality. Souls, even Lord Souls, are referred to as a light but the light itself is a sense of individuality. Something that separates an entity from the endless black. This is why humanity is darkness but wreathed in light. It is an individual singular existence, much like a soul, but it exists within The Abyss. It is what is left when the soul has been consumed: A thing that should not be, but is. The Light in the Dark and the Dark in the Light.

Unpopular theories: All of Dark Souls 2 takes place in the Abyss. It is not a physical place, which is why everything is disjointed and elevators in flat plains lead to fortresses on top of a volcano. Majula is the precipice on the edge of the Abyss, and all that lies below is what has been subsumed.

Being undead isn't the curse, so much as the 'dark sign' is, because that is what turns you hollow. Your dark soul leaks out of it, and you become something 'inhuman'. I just finished Bloodborne, it's pretty sweet.

I don't think people understand that the Fire and the Light has just as much of an influence over beings within its reach as Dark does. The reason why Hollowing is such an issue is because the "Curse" is simply a marker that a proper "Human" is now affected by the ebb and flow of the nature of Light and Dark and is incapable of meeting death, but will instead forever continue to die until all vestiges of Light (Souls) and Dark (Humanity) have been purged from them, and they simply wonder about as the empty beings they truly are.

I really want to see more observations on Null beings within the series. We know that in the beginning, there were the Ancient Dragons, towering Archtrees, and then these odd Hollow things that would wander about senselessly, and at some point, some of them found Fire, which birthed the concept of gods, humans, demons, etc. We know that the gods and other deities of Lordran were beings that can only exist due to the First Flame, and have to exist thanks to Light, as well as entities like demons formed within the Bed of Chaos, any monster that exists thanks to Soul manipulation, and any being that consumes or possesses a Great Soul. We know that Abyssal monstrosities like the Four Kings, the Sisters of Dark, and any other mutant within the Abyss (most especially the giant Humanity sprites) can only exist due to the Darkness. However some beings, dragons and "humans" most especially, are affected very dramatically by both.

But in the intro cinematic it says 'and then from the dark, they came'. Those hollow things came from the dark, which was a result of the first flame, not the 'grey' time of the everlasting dragons.
