I guess I was so blinded by the existence of a 'Sonic 4' that I refused to see past the bad physics and slow forward momentum.

I hope Dimps never makes another Sonic game ever again.

Why doesn't anyone ever bring up the Advance series or Rush? Are they just so average people forget about them?

Sonic Advance 1 is incredibly inoffensive; It's basically a Genesis Sonic that's average in every way. There's not much special about it, but it's not a train wreck to everything that came after

Advance 2, 3, and the Rush were interesting concepts that could have been executed better

I liked Sonic 4 a lot actually. I 100%ed it to play as Super Sonic in all the levels which I felt was cathartic if not impractical.

I didn't care for this one too much, above the issues with shitty characters and story, I found the gameplay to be largely dissatisfying and there were quite a few gimmick levels that I didn't appreciate. "co-op" was also a slap in the face.

Everyones got their takes on the three Advance games but no one thinks its a disaster like Sonic 4. Advance 1 plays well but is derivative. Advance 2 ends up being hurt by how special stages work. 3 has a lot of bullshit and samey level design. All three have interesting ideas for how different characters can operate in the classic games and I hope taxman's team doesn't ignore them.

Truth be told it isn't THAT bad, there are much worse Sonic games. At least the level design is fairly decent instead of DUDE SPEED LOL like Advance 2+ and the boost games. But the physics... or lack thereof. Way to entirely miss the point of Sonic, Sega.

It was most certainly a mistake but it's far better than, say, Lost World or Heroes.

People bitch about the NSMB series, but most of that criticism has to do with the uninteresting art and music style. Barring the first one on the DS, those games tended to have worthy and even great 2D Mario level design.

Sonic 4 just has shit everything, especially the level design.

Part 1 sucked, but part 2 was pretty good, it had much better level design and they improved the physics, if not fixing them totally. The soundfont was still total garbage though.

Advance 2's problem isn't stages being made around speed, it's the red rings special stage system forcing you to take one specific route through every stage.

I'm replaying Rush now that I've actually played the Genesis games.
It's not very good at all. Still got an incredible soundtrack though.
