I barely thought it would live up to the hype, let alone exceed it. I've been playing for four hours straight across only two systems and about five planets/moons, and it has been absolutely and utterly humbling. My breath is being taken away at every turn.

I just drowned trying desperately to make my way out of a dark underwater cave on a cold, lonely, massive planet, with ominous growling startling me from far across some rocky, eroded mountains against the backdrop of a massive dark blue system. Earlier I was marveling at a herd of grazing antelope-like creatures on a little yellow paradise of a moon with a pink sky. Creatures were screeching in the distance and tinkling piano chords played in the background.

I very much appreciate the technical and leveling aspects such as mining and trading, but most of all, this game has been an extremely emotional experience for me so far. I could barely pull myself away from my first system once I acquired the warp cell. No matter what I'm looking at, I have this excitement and this wonder and frustration that I am inevitably missing so much. I have never, EVER felt this lost. Space just beckons, wordlessly. What a beautiful, beautiful, titanic game. I have no words.

1 Year in and still no: planetary orbits, actual stars/suns, freighters being shot down, a form of hacking, actual multiplayer, planets/creatures becoming "weirder and more alien" the closer you get to the center, a non cop out piece of fucking shit end goal that is a glorified new game+ button that does jack shit, sand worms, landing on asteroids, destructible space stations, huge space battles consisting of warring factions in which you can choose sides, a large amount of structures and building types just not present as advertised, intelligent creature AI, physics that affect trees and the environment around said creatures, solar eclipses, crashed underwater ships, bioluminescent planets, roaming sentinel walkers, AI ships landing on planets not only trade posts, the ability to fly from system to system without using a warp drive, and that's just the shit I remember compared to what we currently have with all the updates combined, literally the only update that has even somewhat addressed the core issues the game has had since day fucking 1 is the most recent one Atlas Rises, is it really such a fucking surprise people are STILL pissed at this game? I haven't played since the patch prior to the freighters/houses/buggies update but prior to that the base game is just awful. Your first area will most likely be great unless you start on an area filled with no life and you'll feel like there's so much to see, but once you actually take off and fly to a new planet and realize all the basic elemental flowers all look nearly the exact same as on 50 other planets, how much insane grinding needs to be done to get 48 slot ships and 24 slot multi tools, and how much micromanaging you need to do anything it'll drive you insane. Hell, trying to get 100% animals on a world can either take 5 minutes or 5 hours, no joke.

The 60 or 80 hours I put into the game diligently hunting out words from each culture meant the most I could understand was 3 words in any encounter at best. Ship hunting is mind numbing let alone ship part hunting, and when you realize how horrible farming warp cells to get to the Atlas centers is you'll want to drop the game.

What makes matters worse is I heard they patched the jetpack melee glitch (The one where you punch + sprint + boost) so now you lose any measure of traversing at a reasonable speed unless you have the buggies now which means you need to get out of it every time you want to farm. I paid either $20 or $40 for it (B2G1 50% deal) and I wouldn't recommend it, even if they tried to fix some of the issues the base problems are that it's a nightmare to get anything you actually want and you're constantly given the middle finger when wanting to do anything, and anything they do add just means more grinding, and if you want to see anything new you stop feeling that "newness" after about 5 planets since lots of things look the same. If you want a game to take screenshots them by all means, but it's not a good game.

Its so weird how much I want to like this game.
I cant get into elite dangerous for some reason, or what the point is in that game, but I love the scale and visuals. No mans sky could be so much better if they dropped the gay pop sci style and made everything a little more like real space. Darker, with orbiting planets, gas giants, ringed planets, planets with different gravity would even help. Goddamn theyre so dumb at hello games but I want it to work

I like cruising around space in my little rocket ship in sandbox mode; collecting the same handful of resources every 5 minutes to do anything isn't very fun. I'm enjoying my time with NMS so far but I'm damn glad I didn't pay 60 bucks for it.

How big was the gap between what Murray, Hello Games, and Sony promised and what was actually delivered at launch? It's cool that there making an effort, but the issue is the core gameplay

It's repetitive and boring, and honestly with the creatures being a big draw to the game, they fucking suck

Unless you mod the game they're only like 4m high, and even then they do nothing. They just walk around in a circle.

The first few hours are pretty fun as it's all new but you'll swiftly realise there's nothing more to the game.
