You are right. Establishing a villain (even a secondary one) as being a legitimate threat to the protagonist is necessary to create tension. Nadine defeating Drake is not a problem. The problem arises when she remains undefeated by him and actually gets away cleanly.

Where ND failed was in not adding a sequence where Nate defeats her in some manner (even if it's just outwitting her). It defeats the purpose of building Nadine up as a competent adversary - if she ultimately just disappears from the story, then why even bother?

It has nothing to do with feminist propaganda or whatever nonsense people are spouting. It's just a bit of shitty writing. Whoever was in charge of handling the Nadine character fucked up bad.
