>>387095181
In a nutshell, yes. It might have some bugs. Stealth might not work properly. But Perfect Dark is an absolutely sublime FPS game that is ideologically cousin to the Hitman series. You're given these small sandboxes where the AI goes about their business, and you are tasked with completing objectives using every means available to you.

From a design perspective, Air Base is amazing and we just don't see stuff like it in modern FPS titles.

What do people think of Zero?

I bought it for super cheap, like $2.50, and played the first couple of missions today--not really enough to give any real thoughts one way or another, but so far I've enjoyed the tiny bit I've seen of it.
>>
>>387095181
I just dont get the ending. She killed the skedar guy and then it just ended with her and elvis on the planet. Where did they go? how did they get back? what happend to carrington institute and everyone in it? And just everything else.
>>
i don't understand why every fps copies fucking regen health and not the mission/cheat/multiplayer systems in goldeneye and perfect dark.

like i've been puzzling over it since i was a child. i remember buying the first halo excitedly and being kind of gutted it didn't have different objectives on legendary, multiplayer bots with different ai and fun cheats/time trial stuff. thought it was an aberration but no one even tried to copy it since and it was the single best thing about those games.
>>
>try replaying it on N64 recently
>framerate stability worse than Goldeneye
>motion-blur effect in general making me motion sick

I really want Rare Replay ported to PC so I can play that 360 remake of it.
>>
>>387100129
Just get a cheap 360?
>>
>>387100129
The 360 remake is definitely better and your qualms are understandable. It is a fantastic game and the underrated pinnacle of FPSs, if I had to pick. But they did go heavy on the motion blur, especially with the dizzying mechanics.

>Making various modes with friends during a weekend sleepover gaming all-nighter

>We decide we want to do a "Zombie Mode" (back in 2000 before the zombie hype mind you), and make the enemy team nothing but Fist/Kung-Fu Sims

>"Oh man this is gonna be great, let's hold out in this room!"

>Here they come, you can hear it because they swing their fists constantly, even at open air. It's some world war Z shit, non-stop shooting and so many corpses clipping into each other they become a solid block

>We're finally overwhelmed, they disarm us, and then proceed to punch us to death
>Being punched in this game made your motion blur increase by triple, and also blackened your screen slightly

>"Okay when we respawn, get to this room"
>We respawn
>The motion blur doesn't go away upon death because Thanks Rare
>tfw we hear the mob of swinging fists opening doors closer, and closer...

The sound of being punched to death in that game never fails to make me laugh.
>>
>>387100572
I'm not sure why it even had the motion blur. It just makes it run worse, and with being dizzy doubling down on the effect, it's even harder to recoup.

Didn't help that the hi-rez mode for the expansion pack was worthless since it made the game run even worse with it on.

Not sure how I managed to play it when it was new without getting nauseated. Probably less obvious on an interlaced tube TV than a modern display.
>>
One thing I hate about this game is using the sniper rifle. I hate how the crosshairs move. It's a relic of the days when Goldeneye was a rail shooter and it is retarded that they kept it on the 360 version

>>387099480
Regen health makes level design simpler. You can design a group of separate encounters and assume that the player will be at full health for each rather than designing a cohesive series of encounters and balancing the whole thing.

>multiplayer bots

It's easier to sell you shitty online

>cheats

Why not charge money for them?

>variable objectives

Modern developers fancy themselves to be auteurs and refuse to compromise their cinematic masterpieces.
>>
>>387098930
It was disappointing and obviously rushed
>>
>>387099480
I just wish more FPS would copy the regen system Resistance 2/Butcher Bay used. It's a decent compromise.

Perfect Dark was goddamn creative with each level. To me the most memorable was the villa where you had to snipe folks from the mountain top, fight through a cave, then clear out a big house. Also the fake ending that has you fight through the start hub.

And the multiplayer kicked ass. Never played the co-op or adversary much bc of the frame rate issues.

And the soundtrack was great.

>>
Good game. Solid title. Perfect? Maybe, maybe not. I'd have to play it again, since its been years.
>>
>>387104041
With patience you could jam open the doors of the shooting range and carefully launch fly-by-wire rockets into the Institute lobby. I had fun seeing how far I could get them to go before they exploded.
>>
>>387098930
I didn't play Zero until Rare Replay but god damn it was very dated. PD still plays great today but Zero feels like a prototype for something that never actually released, especially the multiplayer
>>
>>387101962
>And the soundtrack was great
The soundtrack was a absolutely phenomenal, with great use of motifs and plenty of tweaky, electronic-sounding stuff that fit the game's sci-fi setting perfectly. Joanna even has her own theme, just like James Bond, that appears in much of the music. The whole soundtrack has a vaguely dark, crushing feel to it (the strings, the choir samples, the detuned bells) that really helps build the atmosphere. One of the very best soundtracks on the N64 in my opinion.

Of course all this was completely jettisoned in Perfect Dark Zero, which doesn't sound even a little bit like the first game. What a waste.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRdXiUwQjiQ
>>
>>387102348

Yeah, there's the reacting to specific body parts being shot, but also:
>shoots the gun out of the guy's hand
>guy is surprised for a moment
>collects himself and then picks up his gun
>next guy runs over and turns to see the player and is surprised and drops his own gun

All of that shit is downright cool, and they're the kinds of details devs just don't care to implement any more because it takes too much time and effort.
>>
>>387105120
What genre is the PD soundtrack? Industrial techno? I've been trying to find similar music/artists but have had no luck and always find myself going back to the OST.
>>
>>387098930

Perfect Dark:
>Joanna Dark is British and a secret agent

Perfect Dark Zero:
>Joanna Dark is an American teenager

All you need to know, really. It's a shit game and a shit prequel, it has no redeeming qualities.

I mean..how do you not know this? You made the fucking game.
>>
>>387098930
Insanely underrated. The level design is inspired by Deus Ex and features multiple paths and ways to complete objectives.
>>
>>387101962
One of my favorites is the one where the CI gets attacked by the Skedar. It's so fucking hype. Run as fast as you can to save the people working there. I love that room where they are lined up as a firing squad. "Thanks Joanna!".

I still have one copy in plastic. Also, I didn't get the Secret Agent achievement on the 360. Sucks

Pretty much the best part of the game
>>
>>387105329
> Shooting close to someone makes Joanna point her handgun sideways
> Shooting a hand or a tight makes a character walk crippled in pain and slower
> Shooting a body part enough times or cutting it with a bladed weapon makes the enemy bleed profusely
> Enemies from different facilities speak in proper manner according to the area or specialty the are in (president guards call you a terrorist on sight if you carry a weapon)
> Said enemies also have varying degrees of combat training according to the facility they come from (guards inside Are 51 fight using Kung-fu-esque martial arts when unarmed)
>Dissarming an enemy and turning their back on them can sometimes make them attack you or pull a backup gun on you
> Dissarmed enemies beg you not to shoot them or say that they were doing their job
> Some non-combat NPCs tremble in fear when threatened

Rare was one of the few developers then that cared form small details like these. There's a shitton more I'm not mentioning or can't remember.
