I got about 10 hours into Zestiria before quitting out. I hear Berseria is better, but does it require much knowledge of Z to get the most out of it?

No. In fact, it more or less sets up Zestiria not the other way around. Berseria is an upgrade in pretty much everyway. Silky smooth 60 FPS if you're a graphixwhore, the combat has a bit more strategy (even if it is still a bit of a button masher, at times) with status ailments playing a part, and the main cast of a very unique dichotomy similar to that of the TotA cast.

It's more lenient that Zest, as in you can map whatever attacks you want to whatever buttons you want in any order
Also they did away with enemies being fought in tight corridors and hallway, now you have more room and can adjust the camera whenever you want in battle
