extalia really was perfect, unfortunately, no other server is ever going to get on their level; very low exp multiplier with a decent buff to drops is all the game needed, grinding is what makes it fun so high exp sucks dick, but grinding is only fun when you actually get drops some of the time; not fucking 500x+ rates but 10x is a nice multiplier for drops, and bosses dropping retired perma CS items was just a bonus.

I switch between Reboot and Royal. I really hate meso grinding. I also hate starting out at low level. Why can't I quit this fucking game?

The 4 vanilla classes are pretty cool, but needed some more reworking to solidify roles and make stuff more unique. My biggest problem with the current game is that there's so many universal tools that every class I've played feels too similar.
Regardless of your opinion of them, all the characters in the base game played uniquely between each job archetype, whereas the modern game has a few different playstyles and most jobs fit into those few.

Sure, there is some homogeneity when you have like 50 classes or whatever, but there is more than enough gimmicks to differentiate em around. Want to have your own pet and have your attacks vary depending on stance? Ya got it. Maybe a big ass mech is more your thing? Fuck it, play your own pick and choose game from the hero skills. Or maybe you find the combat a bit too braindead and want something that rewards linking skills, thats there too.

If you total up the amount of different 'playstyles' I'd wager its easily more than what the original 4 provided, and lets be real there was overlap there too

I'm not saying that mech and, say, F/P mage have the same abilities or style. What I'm saying is that classes all seem to charge extremely similar tools, rather than a class being mobile, one being a good mobber, one having high single target, whatever.
There's certainly diversity in character style, but end of the day it just feels like it's too little when your class may look entirely different but you still have a flash jump, AOE, single target ability, and then maybe a unique ability or 2.
I'd just like more classes to have to have upsides and downsides other than pure numbers.

I suppose you're right in that there seems to be a new mobility standard that makes everyone feel very similar, but I'd argue that it simply means that the new mobility differentiator is something better. Everyone has a flash jump these days, sure, but now the most mobile classes also have much better vertical flash jumps and enemy homing. Perhaps not to a huge enough degree but there is still a distinct feel to how some stuff plays if you've been in the game a while.

Playing Maplestory with a controller is a blast for some of the more melee oriented classes.
Aran, Hayato, Thief in general, and Mech were great fun with it. I'd consider picking it back up if we ever agree where to play together.

My guess is too many people were being babies about the class diversity, so they decided that everything needs to get a flash jump, especially once they made the whole game "smaller" in terms of Victoria Island and all. They also pretty much did away with traveling on airships since you have immediate teleports everywhere via a general NPC. It really just makes moving around maps faster and I personally enjoy it since it makes getting around less of a pain. There were times where I would be forced to walk through maps and kill everything in my way despite it being risky just because I couldn't jump over them.
Haste is still somewhat okay because movement speed still makes a noticeable difference, but mounts are just dick-waving. Plus, they still cost a good chunk of change - why spend 50m on a pointless status-quo thing when you could spend that on potentially a full set of gear for yourself / another character you're making?

Honestly, while I enjoy some parts of nu-Maple, there's some parts of old-Maple that were nice too. I miss shitting myself when I wandered into where Tauromacis / spears were, and I remember panicking so hard when the ride from Ellinia -> Orbis was going through because if you fucked up staying outside too long, you lost 5k of hard-earned meso that was much harder to accrue back then. Yeah, it's nice to have easier money and faster levels for sure, but sometimes, the slower pacing was nice. It made you jealous of the players with flash jump or their mobs when you had to walk like a snail across maps, but it was nice to explore and find things. Nowadays it's all "Oh how much damage does this deal to me? Can I tank the hit once or twice without needing to heal? How much exp do I get a kill? How fast can I kill it?"
There's not really any awe for maps anymore, and the content they release is all lackluster. The "story" they're shoveling doesn't work nicely because of their stupid mini-cutscene dialogue stuff, and the enemies and such become such a drag because there's practically no content once you hit the 140-ish mark (if I remember correctly, it's been a bit since I played). They release like, one or two things for the higher levels (Like, the 200 mark), but there's not much diversity in getting your way up to 200. Also, it pisses me off to no end how you level up to a bossing level (Say Magnus is 150, you level up to 150) and they'll go "OH LOOK YOU HIT THIS LEVEL YOU SHOULD TOTALLY FIGHT THIS BOSS YOU CAN DO IT" except they make them hit like nukes and their defense is absurd. The carry you have to have is nuts to even survive, but to have gear to fight them, you have to paywall it for constant potential rerolls / perfect scrolling of stuff so you wind up with +150 WATT and a potential of 30% Total Damage + 50% Boss Damage.
I just want your base gameplay to allow you to be able to fight all the cool stuff they put out.

I think the problem with bosses doing insane damage is because their damage does a % of your health, and that Nexon basically removed any function to the defense stat

One problem I've got is that the game is essentially a solo ghost town (At least, in Windia - been there since it came out and I don't want to leave because it's basically become my home once I left Scania / Bera / Broa), and there's no real party aspect to it anymore. It's just a solo grind with player interaction for selling rare stuff / highly in demand stuff.

I just wish it'd be on more equal footing, ya know? Everything should have a "Chaos" form so that way it'll be for the players who are geared to the nines, while the "Normal" is for people who are at the level to fight said boss. "Easy" should be for a low-exp reward and fewer drops in order to learn how the boss fights and to get exposed to them earlier so that way, when you're at the proper level to fight the boss, you'll be ready for what they have to throw at you.
Speaking of bosses, I hate the revamp they gave Zakum. I don't see what was wrong with him originally.
Also, do people still farm Pianus? Does he still spawn? Whenever I've tried to actually fight him, he's never in his cave. Hell, I'm not even sure if I can properly fight him, but I just wanna try outside of a private server.

I stopped playing MapleStory a few months after the Big Bang update. Can I get a quick rundown on the MAJOR stuff thattbeen changed? I don't care about new classes or areas so much, I just want to know if what the big gameplay enhancements (or downgrades) have been

Leveling up has gotten faster compared to pre-Big Bang. I mean like, you can go fight Zakum and level up about 5 or so times if you're fighting him around 100ish.
Basically every class has a flash jump for more mobility. Character Cards existed for a while and it was a system that gave you HP/MP/Stat buffs based on the level of the characters you used, but they also had special stats per class. This system's been changed to this awkward idle-boss system that you have to upgrade your way through to be better.
You can now craft equipment with greater ease than how it used to be. If you need earrings, you can probably make them yourself.
There's a thing called "Potential" on items now - you can pay a bit of money for items outside level 30 and reveal the potential. These stats can make or break how effective your gear can be - if you get a potential of 6% DEX on a pair of Bowman shoes level 45, you might not touch another pair until you can have the base stats be better.
Equips show how much of a base attack boost you'll gain from equipping them based on their stats. Scrolling is now "free" in the sense that you don't need to find scrolls anymore - now you just scroll with these little blue squares enemies drop called "Spell Traces". You can also pick from a handful of scrolls. Once you waste all the scroll slots on an item, you can pay some money and play Russian Roulette for potential additional bonuses. However, past 5 enhancements, you risk degrading your enhancement a level, and I believe at 9 or 10+, you run the risk of breaking your item.
Familiars exist in the form of "If you fight x monster enough and get a card of it in your Use tab, you can register it to your monster book." Most are just ignored, but stuff like the Jr. Boogie and Big Spider mobs are great as familiars because they help with MP recovery or Item Drop Rate.

There's also an in-game tutorial system that helps you learn of some of the changes - it's called "Tot's Tutorial" or something of the like, and if you complete everything (You get free temporary NX clothes and a free permanent hairstyle change [but the coupon for the change expires] from some of the quests), you can get a cool little chair that heals for 50 /10s. Also, there are things called Titles, which sit under your name (And I think under your guild) which are just passive buffs to your stats. One of them for having I believe 7 characters past level 120 or something is a blanket +7? to all stats, some HP, some MP, and some Weapon/Magic attack boosting too. You can also earn a good chunk of medals from quests. If you don't want the medals taking up equip slot space, you can drop them, and there's a little window for Medals, where you can re-issue them if you want, for a small Meso fee.

Thats the problem. HP Washing makes maplestory become MAGEstory. You NEED a mage if you want to have a decent pace of progressing because of farming that money for ap resets, unless you want to sit there and vote for months.
A lot of people dont realize this but HP Washing was NOT intentional from the developers of the original server. Tiger discovered this bug which Nexon did not patch out because that would mean less people paying real money for ap resets. People are adamant about sticking with whats nostalgic instead of what's best for the server overall. There are some games that can revolve around bugs and glitches, like Melee for example, but an MMO like Maple should never revolve around any bug that should've been patched out over a decade ago.

I had a lot of fun at low ranges killing random bosses together with a couple friends of mine. I even got one of those super rare Estaves from one of our many Castellan runs.

They actually didn't. KMS was doing PQs up till like 2015/2016. GMS just had content from japan and SEA that was totally fucking borked and gave more exp per hour than if you ran every single PQ optimally nonstop. Then unfortunately they started catering to whales in GMS, and new content was developed to cater to said whales as well. They keep revamping a lot of PQs, and they're far from horrible experience, you can get like 90~% from a single run of kenta at level 175-180, it's really REALLY good experience, but it's got no one playing it, and no one wants to try outside of events where you have to do them to get the reward.

No I'm talking about MP3 that's been in a stasis bubble since it came out on global. Even in reboot it's mobs don't have the same HP increase as other mobs, but keep the experience/meso drop increase, so it's literally THE only place to train, in the entire game, if you want good exp/mesos per hour.

KMS was running stuff like azwan because it was good experience, and instanced. They'd run kenta and shamos pq, and even dragon rider occasionally. R&J took over as the most popular training in 2016, yeah, but even that's pretty shit compared to just grinding nowadays, because of the constantly running burn events. You can hit 130 in maybe 2 hours if you're slow as hell, totally bypassing pretty much all the PQs until you hit 180+ and can do kenta and dragon rider, which still, very few people do since the change to twilight perion, making it a 180+ area instead of 190. You can pretty much sit at mixed golems from 180-205 with 0 issue.
